Translation

✧ Then the year 158 AH began Account of the dismissal of Mūsā from al-Mawṣil and the appointment of Khālid b. Barmak In this year al-Manṣūr dismissed Mūsā b. Kaʿb from al-Mawṣil, as he had received reports about him that angered him against him. He ordered his son al-Mahdī to proceed to al-Raqqah, while showing that he intended to go to Bayt al-Maqdis, and ordered him to take his route via al-Mawṣil; when he reached the town, he was to seize Mūsā, put him in fetters, and appoint Khālid b. Barmak. Al-Manṣūr had imposed on Khālid b. Barmak three thousand thousand dirhams and given him three days' respite; if he produced the money, well and good, otherwise he would kill him. So Khālid said to his son Yaḥyā: My son, go to our brothers ʿUmārah b. Ḥamzah, Mubārak al-Turkī, Ṣāliḥ the keeper of the prayer-place, and others, and inform them of our situation. Yaḥyā said: I came to them. Some of them prevented me from entering upon them but sent the money; some of them received me with a harsh refusal yet sent the money [secretly to me]. He said: Then I came to ʿUmārah b. Ḥamzah while his face was turned to the wall, and he did not turn toward me. I greeted him, and he returned the greeting weakly. He said: How is your father? I told him the situation and asked for a loan of a hundred thousand. He said: If anything is possible for me, it will come to you. I left cursing him for his pride, and I told my father of his words—and behold, he had already sent the money. He said: In two days we collected two thousand thousand and seven hundred thousand, leaving three hundred thousand, whose difficulty would nullify the whole. He said: I crossed the bridge while distressed, and a diviner leapt toward me and said: The bird's chick has informed you. I brushed him off, but he followed me, took hold of my mount's bridle, and said to me: You are distressed. By God, you will rejoice, and tomorrow you will pass this very spot with the remedy before you. I was astonished at his words, and he said: If that happens, I will have five thousand dirhams from you. I said: Yes—though I thought it far-fetched. News reached al-Manṣūr of the upheaval in al-Mawṣil and al-Jazīrah and the spread of the Kurds there. He said: Who will handle it? Al-Musayyab b. Zuhayr said: I have an opinion that I know you will not accept from me, and I know you will reject it, but I will not refrain from advising you. He said: Speak! I said: No one suits it like Khālid b. Barmak. He said: How can he be fit for us after what we did? He said: By that you have disciplined him, and I am his guarantor. He said: Let him come to me tomorrow. So he brought him, and he pardoned him for the remaining three hundred thousand, appointed him, and appointed his son Yaḥyā over Adharbayjān. Yaḥyā passed by the diviner, took him with him, and gave him fifty thousand dirhams. Khālid sent to ʿUmārah the hundred thousand he had taken from him, with his son Yaḥyā. ʿUmārah said to him: Were you a money-changer for your father? Get away from me—may you never rise! So he returned with the money. Khālid went with al-Mahdī, who dismissed Mūsā b. Kaʿb and appointed them both. Khālid remained over al-Mawṣil, and his son Yaḥyā over Adharbayjān, until al-Manṣūr died. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Sawwār al-Mawṣilī mentioned: We never feared any governor as we feared Khālid, not because he was harsh with us, but because of an awe he had in our hearts.
