Translation

✧ Zabbān b. Fāʾid, Abū Juwayn al-Ḥamrāwī: He was in charge of the maẓālim (grievance courts) in Egypt, and he was the last to hold office for the Umayyads. He was virtuous, one of the most just of their governors. Al-Layth, Ibn Lahīʿah, and Rishdīn b. Saʿd narrated from him. He died in this year. Abū Hāshim al-Zāhid: One of the early ascetics of Baghdad and a contemporary of Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barāthī. Sufyān al-Thawrī used to say: I continued to show off without realizing it until I sat with Abū Hāshim al-Zāhid, and I learned from him to abandon hypocrisy. Abū Hāshim used to say: A man's disciplining himself with good manners is the disciplining of his family. He said: Muḥammad b. al-Ḥasan said: One of our companions narrated to me, saying: Abū Hāshim al-Zāhid said: God Almighty branded this world with desolation so that the intimacy of seekers would be with Him rather than with it, and so that the obedient to Him would turn away from it. Thus the people of knowledge of God feel estranged and yearn for the Hereafter. He said: Ḥakīm b. Jaʿfar said: Hāshim looked at Sharīk the judge coming out of the house of Yaḥyā b. Khālid and wept, saying: I seek refuge in God from knowledge that does not benefit. In this year died Ṣafwān b. ʿAmr and ʿUthmān b. Abī al-ʿĀtikah, both of Damascus, and ʿUthmān b. ʿAṭāʾ, and Ḥammād al-Rāwiyah , who was Ibn Abī Laylā Maysarah—also said to be Sābūr—b. al-Mubārak b. ʿUbayd al-Daylamī al-Kūfī, a client of Muknif b. Zayd al-Khayl al-Ṭāʾī. He was one of the most knowledgeable people about the battle-days of the Arabs, their histories, their poetry, and their dialects. He it was who compiled the seven long Muʿallaqāt. He was called al-Rāwiyah (the transmitter) because of his abundant transmission of poetry from the Arabs. Al-Walīd b. Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik, the Commander of the Faithful, tested him, and he recited to them twenty-nine odes on the letters of the alphabet, each ode approximately one hundred verses. He claimed that no poet among the Arab poets could be named without him reciting for him what no one else knew by heart. So he gave him a hundred thousand dirhams. Abū Muḥammad al-Ḥarīrī mentioned in his book "Durrat al-Ghawwāṣ" that Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik summoned him from Iraq through his deputy Yūsuf b. ʿUmar. When he entered his presence, he found himself in a round hall paved with marble and gold, and with him were two extremely beautiful slave girls. He asked him to recite something, so he recited. Then he said to him: Ask for your need. He said: Whatever it may be, O Commander of the Faithful? He said: And what is it? He said: That you give me one of these two slave girls. He said: They are yours and whatever is on them. And he lodged him in one part of his palace and gave him a thousand dirhams. This is the summary of the story, and it is evident that this caliph was indeed al-Walīd b. Yazīd, for it is mentioned that he drank with him, while Hishām did not drink, and his deputy over Iraq was not Yūsuf b. ʿUmar but Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Qasrī, and after him Yūsuf b. ʿUmar. Ḥammād's death occurred in this year at the age of sixty. Ibn Khillikān said, and it was also said: He lived until the beginning of al-Mahdī's caliphate in the year fifty-eight. God knows best. In this year Ḥammād ʿAjrad was killed for heresy (zandaqah). He was Ḥammād b. ʿUmar b. Yūsuf b. Kulayb al-Kūfī, also said to be from Wāsiṭ. He was a client of Banū Suwāʾah. He was a libertine poet, witty, and dissolute, but he was accused of heresy against Islam. He lived through both the Umayyad and Abbasid dynasties, but he became famous only in the days of the Abbasids. There was much poetic invective between him and Bashshār b. Burd. When Bashshār was also killed for heresy, he was buried with him in his grave. It is also said that Ḥammād ʿAjrad died in the year fifty-eight, and another saying: in the year one hundred sixty-one. God knows best.
