✧ Mention of the governorship of al-Aghlab b. Sālim over Ifrīqiyah When al-Manṣūr learned of Muḥammad b. al-Ashʿath's departure from Ifrīqiyah, he sent to al-Aghlab b. Sālim b. ʿIqāl b. Khafājah al-Tamīmī a covenant appointing him governor of Ifrīqiyah. This al-Aghlab was among those who had risen with Abū Muslim al-Khurāsānī, and he had come to Ifrīqiyah with Muḥammad b. al-Ashʿath. When the covenant reached him, he arrived in al-Qayrawān in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of the year 148 AH and expelled a group of the Muḍarī commanders, and the people settled down. Abū Qurrah rose against him with a large gathering of Berbers, so al-Aghlab marched against him, and Abū Qurrah fled without fighting. Al-Aghlab then proceeded intending to go to Tangier, but that was hard on the troops, who disliked the march and slipped away from him back to al-Qayrawān, until only a small band remained with him. Al-Ḥasan b. Ḥarb al-Kindī was in the city of Tunis, and he corresponded with the troops and called them to himself, and they answered him. He marched until he entered al-Qayrawān without any hindrance. The news reached al-Aghlab, and he returned in haste. One of his companions said to him: "It is not sound judgment to turn aside to meet the enemy with this small force. Rather, the right course is to turn aside to Qābis, for most of those with you will come to you, because they only disliked the march to Tangier and nothing else. Then you will be strengthened by them and fight your enemy." He did that, and his gathering grew large, and he marched against al-Ḥasan b. Ḥarb. They fought a fierce battle, and al-Ḥasan was defeated and a great number of his companions were killed. Al-Ḥasan went on to Tunis in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of the year 150 AH, and al-Aghlab entered al-Qayrawān. Al-Ḥasan mustered and gathered troops until he had a huge force, and he made for al-Aghlab. Al-Aghlab went out from al-Qayrawān to meet him, and they met and fought. An arrow struck al-Aghlab and killed him, but his companions stood firm. Al-Mukhāriq b. Ghifār advanced before them, and al-Mukhāriq charged al-Ḥasan—he was on al-Aghlab's right wing—and routed him, so he fled defeated to Tunis in Shaʿbān of the year 150 AH. Al-Mukhāriq took charge of Ifrīqiyah in Ramaḍān and sent cavalry in pursuit of al-Ḥasan. Al-Ḥasan fled from Tunis to Kināyah and stayed two months, then returned to Tunis, where the troops who were there went out against him and killed him. It has also been said that al-Ḥasan was killed after al-Aghlab was killed, because al-Aghlab's companions stood firm after his death in the battle, and al-Ḥasan b. Ḥarb was also killed, while his companions turned away in defeat. Al-Ḥasan was crucified, and al-Aghlab was buried and called the martyr. This battle took place in Shaʿbān of the year 150 AH.
