✧ Mention of the seditions in al-Andalus In this year Saʿīd al-Yaḥṣubī, known as al-Maṭarī, rose in al-Andalus in the city of Labla. The reason for that was that one day he became drunk, and he remembered those of his Yemeni companions who had been killed with al-ʿAlāʾ, whom we have already mentioned, so he tied a banner. When he sobered up, he saw it tied and asked about it, and was told, so he wanted to untie it, then said: I would not tie a banner and then untie it without anything! And he began the opposition. The Yemenis gathered to him, and he headed for Ishbīliya (Seville), overcame it, and his gathering became large. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, the ruler of al-Andalus, hastened against him with his forces, but al-Maṭarī took refuge in the fortress of Zaʿwāq on the eleventh night remaining of Rabīʿ al-Awwal. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān besieged him there, pressed him hard, and prevented the people of the opposition from reaching him. Ghiyāth b. ʿAlqama al-Lakhmī, who was in the city of Shadhūna, had agreed with him on the opposition, and a group of tribal leaders had joined him, intending to reinforce al-Maṭarī, and they were in a large gathering. When ʿAbd al-Raḥmān heard that, he sent his client Badr against them with an army, and he stood between them and their reaching al-Maṭarī. The siege on him lasted long, and his men dwindled through killing, so some of them abandoned him. One day he came out of the fortress, fought, and was killed, and his head was carried to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. The people of the fortress then put forward Khalīfa b. Marwān over themselves, and the siege continued against them. The people of the fortress sent to request safe-conduct from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān in order to hand over Khalīfa to him, and he agreed to that and granted them safety. They surrendered the fortress and Khalīfa to him, and he destroyed the fortress and killed Khalīfa and those with him. Then he moved against Ghiyāth, who had agreed with al-Maṭarī on the opposition, and besieged them and pressed them hard. They requested safe-conduct, and he granted them safety except for a few whom he knew disliked his rule, for he seized them. He returned to Qurṭuba (Cordoba). When he returned to it, ʿAbd Allāh b. Khurāsha al-Asadī rose against him in the province of Jayyān, and crowds gathered to him, so he raided Qurṭuba. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān sent an army against him, and his gathering dispersed. He requested safe-conduct, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān granted it to him and fulfilled it for him.
