The story of Sulaymān b. Dāwūd (peace be upon them both)

Translation

✧ And he had, ﷺ, of the affairs of kingship, the vastness of his dominion, the multitude of his troops and their variety, what no one before him had, and God does not give it to anyone after him, as He said: “And we have been given of everything.” And he said: “My Lord, forgive me and grant me a dominion that will not behoove anyone after me. Indeed, You are the Bestower.” And God gave him that by the text of the truthful one, the one believed. And when the Exalted mentioned what He had bestowed upon him and extended to him of the complete, immense favors, He said: “This is Our gift, so grant or withhold without reckoning”—that is, give to whomever you will and withhold from whomever you will, for there is no reckoning upon you; that is, dispose of wealth however you will, for God has made lawful for you all that you do of that and does not call you to account for it. This is the state of the prophet-king, in contrast to the servant-messenger, whose state is that he does not give to anyone or withhold from anyone except by God's permission to him in that. And our Prophet Muhammad, God's blessings and ﷺ, was given the choice between these two stations, and he chose to be a servant-messenger. And in some narrations, he consulted Gabriel about that, and he indicated to him to be humble. So he chose to be a servant-messenger, God's blessings and ﷺ. And God placed the caliphate and kingship after him in his community until the Day of Resurrection, so a group of his community will remain victorious until the Hour is established. So to God be praise and favor. And when the Exalted mentioned what He granted to His prophet Sulaymān, ﷺ, of the good of this world, He called attention to what He prepared for him in the Hereafter of abundant reward, beautiful recompense, the nearness that draws him close to Him, the great triumph and honor before Him—that is on the Day of Return and Reckoning—where the Exalted said: “And indeed, for him with Us is nearness and a good place of return.”
