✧ Mention of the killing of Yūsuf al-Fihrī In this year Yūsuf al-Fihrī, who had been amīr of al-Andalus, broke the pact of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Umawī. The reason for that was that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān used to set over him someone who humiliated him and contended with him over his properties, and when he presented the proof of the sharīʿah, he would not act on it. So he became aware of what was intended against him, and he headed for Māridah, and twenty thousand gathered around him. He marched toward ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān came out of Qurṭubah toward him to Ḥiṣn al-Mudawwar. Then Yūsuf decided to go to ʿAbd al-Malik b. ʿUmar b. Marwān, who was governor of Ishbīliyyah, and to his son ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-Malik, who was over al-Mudawwar. He marched toward it, and the two of them came out to him and met him. They fought a fierce battle, and both sides held firm. Then Yūsuf's companions were defeated, and a great number of them were killed. Yūsuf fled and remained wandering about the country. Then one of his companions killed him in Rajab of the year one hundred and forty-two in the region of Ṭulayṭulah, and his head was carried to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, who set it up in Qurṭubah. He also killed his son ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Yūsuf, who had been a hostage with him, and set his head up alongside his father's head. Abū al-Aswad b. Yūsuf remained with ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Umawī as a hostage, and mention of him will come later. As for al-Ṣumayl, when Yūsuf fled from Qurṭubah he did not flee with him. The amīr ʿAbd al-Raḥmān summoned him and asked him about him. He said: "He did not inform me of his affair, and I do not know any news of him." He said: "You must tell me." He said: "Even if he were under my two feet, I would not lift them from him." So he imprisoned him together with the two sons of Yūsuf. When the two of them escaped from prison, he disdained escape and flight, so he remained in prison. Then after that the elders of Muḍar were brought in to him, and they found him dead with a cup and some nibbles beside him. They said: "O Abā Jawshan, we know that you did not drink, but you were made to drink!" He was handed over to his family, and they buried him.
