Translation

✧ Then the year 140 AH began Account of the death of Abū Dāwūd, governor of Khurāsān, and the appointment of ʿAbd al-Jabbār In this year, Abū Dāwūd Khālid b. Ibrāhīm al-Dhuhlī, governor of Khurāsān, died. The cause of his death was that some of the troops rose up against him while he was at Kushmāhan, and they reached the dwelling where he was. He looked down upon them from the wall at night, and his foot trod on the edge of a protruding brick. He began calling out to his companions so that they might recognize his voice, and the brick broke beneath him at dawn, so he fell to the ground and his back was broken, and he died at the time of the afternoon prayer. Then ʿIṣām, his chief of police, took charge after him until ʿAbd al-Jabbār b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Azdī arrived as governor over Khurāsān. When he arrived there, he seized a group of commanders whom he accused of summoning people to the descendants of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, among them: Mujāshiʿ b. Ḥurayth al-Anṣārī, governor of Bukhārā; Abū al-Mughīra Khālid b. Kathīr, client of Banū Tamīm, governor of Qūhistān; and al-Ḥarīsh b. Muḥammad al-Dhuhlī, who was the cousin of Abū Dāwūd. He killed them and imprisoned a group of others, and he pressed the agents of Abū Dāwūd to extract the funds in their possession.
