Translation
✧ Mention of the killing of Mulabbad the Khārijite We have already mentioned his rising in the year before it, and Ḥumayd's fortifying himself against him. When al-Manṣūr learned of Mulabbad's victory and Ḥumayd's fortifying himself against him, he sent to him ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, the brother of ʿAbd al-Jabbār, and attached Ziyād b. Mushkān to him. Mulabbad set an ambush for him of a hundred horsemen, and when ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz met him, the ambush came out against him, and they routed him and killed most of his companions. So [al-Manṣūr] sent Khāzim b. Khuzaymah against him with about eight thousand of the Marwarūdhiyyah. Khāzim marched until he encamped at al-Mawṣil, and he sent some of his companions to Mulabbad. Mulabbad crossed the Tigris from Balad and marched toward Khāzim. Khāzim marched against him, with Naḍalah b. Nuʿaym b. Khāzim b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Nahshalī over his vanguard and scouts, Zuhayr b. Muḥammad al-ʿĀmirī over his right wing, Abū Ḥammād al-Abraṣ over his left wing, and Khāzim in the center. He continued to keep pace with Mulabbad and his companions until nightfall, and they stood facing each other that night. The next day, Mulabbad marched toward the district of Ḥazzah, with Khāzim and his companions keeping pace with them until night covered them. They awoke the next day and Mulabbad marched as if he intended to flee, so Khāzim went out in his pursuit and they left their trench. Khāzim had entrenched upon his companions with caltrops, and when they came out of it, Mulabbad and his companions charged upon them. When Khāzim saw that, he cast the caltrops before himself and his companions. They charged upon Khāzim's right wing and folded it up, then charged upon the left wing and folded it up, then reached the center where Khāzim was. Khāzim called out among his companions: "To the ground, to the ground!" So they dismounted, and Mulabbad and his companions dismounted and hamstrung most of their mounts. Then they struck with swords until they broke. Khāzim ordered Naḍalah b. Nuʿaym that when the dust rose and they could not see one another, he should return to his horse and the horses of his companions, mount them, and then shoot arrows at them. He did that, and Khāzim's companions came back from the right wing to the left wing, then they shot arrows at Mulabbad and his companions. Mulabbad was killed along with eight hundred men of those who had dismounted, and about three hundred of them were killed before they dismounted. The rest fled, and Naḍalah pursued them and killed a hundred and fifty of them.
