Translation
✧ Mention of the uprising of Sunbādh in Khurāsān In this year Sunbādh rose up in Khurāsān seeking vengeance for the blood of Abū Muslim. He was a Magian from a village of the villages of Naysābūr called Ahrawānah. His appearance was in anger at the killing of Abū Muslim, because he was one of his protégés. His followers became numerous, and most of them were from the people of the mountains. He gained control over Naysābūr, Qūmis, and al-Rayy, and he was called Fayrūz Aṣbahbadh. When he came to al-Rayy, he seized Abū Muslim's treasuries, which Abū Muslim had left behind at al-Rayy when he departed to Abū al-ʿAbbās. He took the women captive, plundered the wealth, and did not molest the merchants. He made it known that he intended to go to the Kaʿbah and demolish it. Al-Manṣūr sent against him Jumhūr b. Mirār al-ʿIjlī with ten thousand horsemen. They met between Hamadhān and al-Rayy on the edge of the desert. Jumhūr resolved on a protracted engagement. When they met, Sunbādh put the captured Muslim women forward on camels. When they saw the Muslim army, they stood up in the litters and cried out, "Woe, Muḥammad! Islam is gone!" The wind blew into their garments, the camels bolted and turned back upon Sunbādh's army, and the army scattered. That was the cause of the rout. The Muslims followed the camels and put the swords to the Magians and those with them, killing them as they pleased. The number of those killed was about sixty thousand. They took their offspring and women captive. Then Sunbādh was killed between Ṭabaristān and Qūmis. Between Sunbādh's uprising and his killing there were seventy nights. The reason for his killing was that he headed for Ṭabaristān seeking refuge with its ruler. The ruler sent to his route an agent of his named Ṭaws. Sunbādh behaved haughtily toward him, so Ṭaws struck his neck and wrote to al-Manṣūr of his killing, taking the wealth that was with him. Al-Manṣūr wrote to the ruler of Ṭabaristān demanding the wealth from him, but he denied it, so he dispatched troops against him, and he fled to al-Daylam.
