Translation

✧ The Caliphate of al-Manṣūr [137 - 158 AH] Abū Jaʿfar ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās, and his mother was Sallāmah al-Barbariyyah, an umm walad. He was born in the year ninety-five, and he met his grandfather but did not narrate from him. He narrated from: his father, and from ʿAṭāʾ b. Yasār, and from him: his son al-Mahdī. He was pledged allegiance as caliph by a covenant from his brother. He was the stallion of the Banū al-ʿAbbās in awe, courage, resoluteness, judgment, and might, a collector of wealth, one who abandoned diversion and play, of complete intellect, good participation in knowledge and adab, and sound in soul. He killed many people until his rule became upright; and he is the one who struck Abū Ḥanīfah – may God have mercy on him – over the judgeship, then imprisoned him, and he died after some days. It is said that he killed him with poison because he gave a legal opinion supporting rising against him. He was eloquent, articulate, well-spoken, and suited for command. He was extreme in avarice and miserliness, so he was nicknamed Abū al-Dawānīq because of his accounting of the governors and craftsmen over dāniqs and grains. Al-Manṣūr assumed the caliphate at the beginning of the year thirty-seven, and the first thing he did was to kill Abū Muslim al-Khurāsānī, the master of their daʿwah and the one who paved the way for their kingdom!!.
