Translation
✧ An account of the affair of the Kharijites and the killing of Shaybān b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz When Khāzim marched to al-Baṣrah with the troops who were with him—and he had selected from his own people, his kinsmen, his clients, and the people of Marw al-Rūdh those whom he trusted—when he reached al-Baṣrah, Sulaymān carried them on ships, and a number of the Banū Tamīm also joined him at al-Baṣrah. Then they traveled by sea until they anchored at the island of Ibn Kāwān. Khāzim dispatched Faḍlah b. Nuʿaym al-Nahshalī with five hundred men against Shaybān. They met and fought fiercely. Shaybān and his companions boarded ships and sailed to ʿUmān, and they were Ṣufriyyah. When they arrived at ʿUmān, al-Julundā and his companions fought them—they were Ibāḍiyyah—and the fighting between them intensified. Shaybān and those with him were killed. The killing of Shaybān in this context has already been mentioned in the year 129 AH. Then Khāzim sailed by sea with those with him until they anchored on the coast of ʿUmān. They went out into the desert. Al-Julundā and his companions met them, and they fought fiercely. On that day, there was much killing among Khāzim's companions, and among them a brother of his from his mother was killed along with ninety men. Then they fought on the following day a fierce battle, and on that day nine hundred of the Kharijites were killed, and about ninety of them were burned. Then they met seven days after Khāzim's arrival, based on a plan suggested by one of Khāzim's companions. He advised him to order his companions to place tow on the tips of their spearheads, soak it in naphtha, ignite fires in it, and then advance with it until they set fire to the houses of al-Julundā's companions, which were made of wood. When they did that and their houses were set ablaze, they became occupied with them and with those inside them of their children and families. Khāzim and his companions attacked them, put them to the sword, and killed them. They killed al-Julundā among those who were killed. The number of those killed reached ten thousand. He sent their heads to al-Baṣrah, and Sulaymān forwarded them to al-Saffāḥ. Khāzim remained after that for months until al-Saffāḥ summoned him, and he came.
