✧ Then the year 134 AH began. [Account of the renunciation of Bassām b. Ibrāhīm] In this year, Bassām b. Ibrāhīm b. Bassām—one of the horsemen of the people of Khurāsān—renounced allegiance. He and a group of like-minded men departed secretly from the camp of al-Saffāḥ toward al-Madāʾin. Al-Saffāḥ dispatched Khāzim b. Khuzaymah against him, and they fought. Bassām and his companions were routed, and most of them were killed. Everyone who was overtaken in flight was also killed. Then Khāzim turned back and passed by Dhāt al-Maṭāmīr, where the maternal uncles of al-Saffāḥ from Banū ʿAbd al-Mudān were—thirty-five men—along with eighteen men from other tribes and seventeen of their clients. He did not greet them. When he had passed them, they reviled him. He bore rancor against them in his heart because of what had reached him about the affair of al-Mughīrah b. al-Fazaʿ and that he had sought refuge with them; he was one of Bassām's companions. So he returned to them and asked them about al-Mughīrah. They said: "A man passed by us whom we did not know; he stayed in our village for one night, then departed from us." He said to them: "You are the maternal uncles of the Commander of the Faithful, and his enemy comes to you and feels safe in your village! Why did you not band together and seize him?" They replied to him harshly. So he ordered them, and their necks were struck—all of them—and he demolished their houses and plundered their wealth. Then he departed. This reached the Yemenis, so they gathered together. Ziyād b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥārithī entered with them upon al-Saffāḥ, and they said to him: "Khāzim has been insolent toward you and belittled your rights. He killed your maternal uncles—those who traversed the lands and came to you seeking honor through you and your favor, until they came under your protection. Khāzim killed them, demolished their houses, and plundered their wealth without any offense they had committed." So al-Saffāḥ resolved to kill Khāzim. This reached Mūsā b. Kaʿb and Abū al-Jahm b. ʿAṭiyyah, and they entered upon al-Saffāḥ and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, we have heard what has happened with these people and that you have resolved to kill Khāzim. We adjure you by God not to do that. He has obedience and a prior record, and what he did can be borne. Your partisans from the people of Khurāsān have preferred you over relatives and children, and have killed those who opposed you. You are the most deserving of overlooking the misdeeds of their wrongdoers. If you are determined to kill him, do not do it yourself. Send him on a mission in which, if he is killed, you will have achieved what you want; and if he prevails, his victory will be for you." They advised him to send Khāzim against the Kharijites in Oman and the Kharijites on the island of Ibn Kāwān under Shaybān b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Yashkurī. So al-Saffāḥ ordered that he be sent with seven hundred men, and he wrote to Sulaymān b. ʿAlī, who was governor of al-Baṣrah, to transport them to the island of Ibn Kāwān and Oman. Khāzim then set out.
