Translation
✧ Al-Ḥasan b. Jaʿfar related from his father, who said: When the caliphate passed to the Banū al-ʿAbbās, men of the Banū Umayyah went into hiding. Among those who hid was Ibrāhīm b. Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik, until Dāwūd b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh obtained for him a guarantee of safety from Abū al-ʿAbbās. One day Abū al-ʿAbbās said to him: Tell me about what happened to you during your concealment. He said: O Commander of the Faithful, I was hiding in al-Ḥīrah in a house opening onto the desert. While I was one day on the roof of a house, I looked and saw black banners that had come out of al-Kūfah heading for al-Ḥīrah. It occurred to me that they were seeking me, so I left the house in disguise and entered al-Kūfah, knowing no one there with whom I could hide. I entered in confusion, and behold, I came upon a large gate and a spacious courtyard. I entered the courtyard and sat down in it. Then a handsome man of fine appearance on a horse entered the courtyard with a group of his servants and followers. He said: Who are you, and what do you need? I said: A man in hiding who fears for his life, and I seek protection in your house. He said: So he brought me into his house, then lodged me in a chamber adjoining his women's quarters. I stayed with him for a year, with all that I liked of food, drink, and clothing, and he never asked me about any of my circumstances. He went out riding every day. One day I said to him: I see that you ride constantly; what is that for? He said: Ibrāhīm b. Sulaymān killed my father in cold blood, and it has reached me that he is in hiding, so I am searching for him to attain my vengeance. My astonishment increased at our misfortune, since fate had driven me to hide in the house of one who sought my blood. I became weary of life. I asked the man his name and his father's name, and he told me them, and I knew that I had killed his father. I said: O you, your right has become binding upon me, and it is part of your right that I should make the way easy for you. He said: And what is that? I said: I am Ibrāhīm b. Sulaymān, the killer of your father, so take your vengeance. He said: I think you are a man whom concealment has distressed, and so you have come to desire death. I said: Rather it is the truth. I said: I killed him on such-and-such a day for such-and-such a reason. When he knew that I was truthful, his face darkened, his eyes reddened, and he bowed his head for a long while. Then he said: As for you, you will meet my father and he will take his due from you. As for me, I will not violate my protection. So depart from me, for I do not trust myself with you. He gave me a thousand dinars, but I did not accept them and left his presence. So this was the noblest man I have ever seen. We have also related that Maryah, the wife of Marwān b. Muḥammad, asked permission to enter upon al-Khayzurān, while Zaynab bt. Sulaymān b. ʿAlī al-Hāshimī was with her. When she entered, Zaynab said: Praise be to God, who removed your blessing and made you a warning example. Do you remember, O enemy of God, when the women of my family came to you asking you to speak to your companions about the properties of Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad, and you received them with that reception, and sent them out in that manner? She laughed and said: O cousin, what amazed you about God's good dealing with me in that, so that you wished to follow my example in it?! Then she turned and went out.
