✧ Ḥafṣ b. Sulaymān, Abū Salamah al-Khallāl, vizier of Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Saffāḥ: He was the first to serve as vizier for them. He was not a vinegar-maker; rather, his house in Kufa was near the vinegar-makers, and he used to sit with them, so he was called Khallāl. He was killed in this year, as we mentioned in the events of the year. Al-Rabīʿ b. Abī Rāshid, Abū ʿAbd Allāh: He heard from Saʿīd b. Jubayr and from al-Thawrī. He was like one absent from creation. From Khalaf b. Ḥawshab, who said: I was with al-Rabīʿ b. Abī Rāshid in the cemetery, and a man recited: "O people, if you are in doubt about the Resurrection..." the verse. Al-Rabīʿ said: The remembrance of death intervened between me and much of the trade I desire. If the remembrance of death left my heart for an hour, I would fear that my heart would be corrupted. Were it not that I would contradict those before me, the cemetery would be my dwelling until I die. He said: ʿUmar b. Dhar said: When I saw al-Rabīʿ b. Abī Rāshid, it was as if he were intoxicated without wine. Zabbān b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Marwān b. al-Ḥakam, Abū Ibrāhīm: He was the chief of the Banū ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz and their horseman. He was present at the battle with Marwān b. Muḥammad on the night of Būṣīr, and his horse stumbled with him, so al-Miswar killed him in this year, and they did not recognize him. Al-Awzāʿī narrated from him. Ṣafwān b. Sulaym, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Zuhrī, client of Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān: He narrated from Ibn ʿUmar, Jābir, ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar, Sahl b. Ḥunayf, and a group of the major Successors. He was trustworthy, prolific in ḥadīth, and devout. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Abī Ḥāzim said: Ṣafwān b. Sulaym accompanied me to Makkah, and he did not lay his side in the howdah until he returned. Saʿīd b. Kathīr b. Yaḥyā said: My father narrated to me, saying: Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik came to Madinah while ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz was his governor there. He said: He prayed ẓuhr with the people, then opened the door of the maqṣūrah, leaned against the miḥrāb, and faced the people. He looked at Ṣafwān b. Sulaym without knowing him and said: O ʿUmar, who is this man? I have never seen a finer bearing than his. He said: O Commander of the Faithful, this is Ṣafwān b. Sulaym. He said: O boy, a purse containing five hundred dinars. So a purse containing five hundred dinars was brought, and he said to his servant: Do you see that man standing in prayer? He described him to the boy until he had fixed him in mind. He said: The boy went out with the purse and sat down beside Ṣafwān. When Ṣafwān saw him, he bowed and prostrated, then said the salutation and turned to him. He said: What do you need? He said: The Commander of the Faithful has ordered me—and he is looking at you and me—to give you this purse containing five hundred dinars, and he says to you: Use this to help with your time and your family. Ṣafwān said: I am not the one to whom you were sent. The boy said: Are you not Ṣafwān b. Sulaym? He said: Yes, I am Ṣafwān b. Sulaym. He said: Then it is to you I was sent. He said: Go and make certain; when it is confirmed, then come. The boy said: Then keep the purse with you while I go. He said: No, if I keep it I will have taken it. But go and make certain, and I will sit here. The boy turned away, and Ṣafwān took his sandals and left; he was not seen there until Sulaymān departed from Madinah. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. ʿĀṣim said: Abū Muṣʿab narrated to us, saying: Ibn Ḥāzim said to me: My father and I entered to ask about Ṣafwān b. Sulaym while he was in his prayer place. My father kept at it until he brought him back to his bed. His female client told me that the hour you left, he died. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd, client of the Banū ʿĀmir b. Luʾayy, the secretary, secretary of Marwān b. Muḥammad: He was the foundation of eloquence; he laid down its principles, established its roots, and elaborated its branches. Before him, Sālim, client of Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik, had been foremost in this craft, but he was below ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd. In his youth he was attached to ʿAbd Allāh b. Mālik al-Thaqafī, secretary of al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik, and was educated and excelled. Then he attached himself to Marwān b. Muḥammad before the caliphate and gained influence over him. He wrote before him, before the caliphate, the finest script, and he did not claim anything of eloquence. Then during the caliphate he stood in the position of vizier. Aḥmad b. Yūsuf the secretary said: ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Yaḥyā saw me while I was writing in a poor hand, and he said: If you want to improve your script, lengthen your jaw and smell it, and slant your pen and lean it to the right. The scholars of biography said: The rule of the Umayyads ended with four men whose like never came together in any dynasty: Marwān b. Muḥammad b. al-Ḥakam in his courage and governance, ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd in his writing and eloquence, Yazīd b. ʿUmar b. Hubayrah in his management and sound judgment, and Naṣr b. Sayyār in his authority, discipline, and far-reaching voice. ʿUmar b. al-Munkadir: He was among the devout strivers and those who stand in night prayer. From Ibn ʿUmar, who said: The mother of ʿUmar b. al-Munkadir said to ʿUmar: I long to see you asleep. He said: Mother, by God, the night returns to me and terrifies me, and it passes from me while I have not fulfilled my need. In another report: They said to him: What is this abundant weeping? He said: A verse from the Book of God, exalted be He, made me weep: "And there will appear to them from God that which they had not reckoned." Manṣūr b. al-Muʿtamir, Abū ʿAttāb, al-Sulamī: He transmitted from Anas and from a group of the major Successors. He was a scholar, devout, and trustworthy. He fasted forty years and more, and he appeared bereaved as if struck by calamity, and he wept until his eyes became weak. From Zāʾidah b. Qudāmah, who said: Manṣūr b. al-Muʿtamir fasted for forty years, standing in prayer by night and fasting by day. He would weep at night, and his mother would say to him: My son, have you killed someone? He would say: I know what I have done to myself. When morning came, he would apply kohl to his eyes, anoint his head, moisten his lips, and go out to the people. One day Yūsuf b. ʿUmar, governor of Kufa, seized him, wanting him to serve as judge, but he refused. He said: I entered upon him after the shackle had been brought to bind him. Two litigants came and sat before him, but he did not question them or speak to them. It was said to Yūsuf b. ʿUmar: Even if you flayed his flesh, he would not undertake the judgeship for you. So he released him and left him. Ibn Nāṣir informed us with his chain from al-ʿAlāʾ b. Sālim al-ʿAbdī, who said: Manṣūr used to pray on his roof. When he died, a boy said to his mother: Mother, the trunk that was in the house of so-and-so, I no longer see it. She said: My son, that was not a trunk; that was Manṣūr, and he has died. Ibn ʿUyaynah said: I saw Manṣūr b. al-Muʿtamir in a dream and said: What did God do with you? He said: I almost met God with the work of a prophet. Sufyān said: Manṣūr fasted for sixty years, standing by night and fasting by day. In this year died ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Najīḥ and Isḥāq b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Ṭalḥah al-Anṣārī. In this year Yaḥyā b.
