Translation

✧ When ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī came to Damascus, he encamped at the Eastern Gate, Ṣāliḥ b. ʿAlī encamped at the Gate of al-Jābiya, Abū ʿAwn encamped at the Gate of Kaysān, Bissām at the Small Gate, Ḥumayd b. Qaḥṭaba at the Gate of Tūmā, and ʿAbd al-Ṣamad, Yaḥyā b. Ṣafwān, and al-ʿAbbās b. Yazīd at the Gate of al-Farādīs. They besieged it for days, then conquered it on Wednesday, ten nights having passed of Ramaḍān of this year. He killed many of its inhabitants, allowed it to be plundered for three hours, and demolished its wall. It is said that when ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī besieged its people, they disagreed among themselves, between ʿAbbāsid and Umayyad, until they fought one another, killing each other and killing their governor, then they surrendered the city. The first one to climb the wall from the direction of the Eastern Gate was a man called ʿAbd Allāh al-Ṭāʾī, and from the direction of the Small Gate Bassām b. Ibrāhīm. Then Damascus was given over to plunder for three hours, until it is said that about fifty thousand were killed in it during this period. Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir mentioned in the biography of ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan al-Aʿraj, from the descendants of Jaʿfar b. Abī Ṭālib, who was commander of five thousand with ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī in the siege of Damascus, that they remained besieging it for five months; it is also said one hundred days; and it is said a month and a half. The city had been fortified greatly by Marwān's governor, but its people disagreed among themselves because of the Yemeni and Muḍar factions, and that was the cause of the conquest, to the extent that they placed in every mosque two miḥrābs for the two qiblas, even in the congregational mosque two minbars and two imams who delivered the Friday sermon from the two minbars. This is among the strangest things that occurred, the most bizarre things that happened, and the most terrible things that were introduced because of discord, passion, and partisanship. We ask God for safety and well-being. Al-Ḥāfiẓ expounded on that in the aforementioned biography. He mentioned in the biography of Muḥammad b. Sulaymān b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Nawfalī, who said: I was with ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī when he first entered Damascus. He entered it by the sword for three hours of the day, and he made its congregational mosque a stable for his mounts and camels for seventy days. And al-Saffāḥ sent the wife of Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik, namely ʿAbda bt. ʿAbd Allāh b. Yazīd b. Muʿāwiya, the owner of the maternal uncle, with a group of Khurasanians to the desert on foot, barefoot, unveiled. They kept committing adultery with her, then they killed her.
