Translation
✧ He said: ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀʾishah said: When the affair became settled for Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Saffāḥ, he delivered a sermon one day and gave an excellent sermon. When he descended from the pulpit, al-Sayyid rose to him and recited to him: Here it is for you, O Banū Hāshim, for its emirs have renewed what was obliterated; here it is for you, not on the heel of one who finds its kingship over you a competitor; here it is for you, so wear its crown, may you never lack from among you one who wears it. The caliphate of God and His authority, and a root that had been effaced for you. If the pulpit were given choice of its horsemen, it would choose none but a horseman from you; and if kingship were consulted among its rulers, it would choose none but a ruler from you. No servant of God remains in Syria among the family of Abū al-ʿĀṣ, not even one who sneezes. Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Saffāḥ said to him: Ask your need. He said: May you be pleased with Sulaymān b. Ḥabīb b. al-Muhallab and appoint him over al-Ahwāz. He said: I have done it. Then he ordered that a covenant for Sulaymān over al-Ahwāz be written and handed to al-Sayyid. It was written, then al-Sayyid took it and went to Sulaymān in al-Baṣrah. When his eye fell upon him, he recited to him, saying: We have brought you, O chief of the people of Iraq, the best document from the one who stands; we have come to you from the best of mankind, and that is the paternal cousin of Abū al-Qāsim. We have brought your covenant from him over those under your authority among the world; he entrusts you in it with great affairs, so you are the protégé of Banū Hāshim. Sulaymān said to him: A nobleman and an intercessor, an envoy and a poet, and a relative. Ask your need. He said: A comely, beautiful slave girl and one who serves her, a purse and one who carries it, a grazing horse and its groom, and a chest of assorted garments and its bearer. He said: I have ordered for you all that you asked, and you shall have from me the like of it every year. Al-Ṣūlī said: And Jabalah b. Muḥammad narrated to us, saying: My father narrated this report to us, and he added in it: Sulaymān said to al-Sayyid: Demand. He said: I shall demand, since you have let me demand, without excess and without shortcoming, O son of the noble knights: three thousand, and a slave, and a mule, and a beautiful slave girl with plump buttocks, And a saddle, and a sturdy hackney, and clothing, and that is not excessive for the judgment of a judge upon a man of generosity who gives you until it is as though he sees in what he gives you the dreams of a sleeper. Relieve me with that from this assembly of mine, for by your right, if I am not given it, I shall not cease to seek.
