Translation

✧ Mention of the people of al-Jazīrah wearing white and renouncing allegiance In this year the people of al-Jazīrah wore white and renounced Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Saffāḥ, and they marched to Ḥarrān, where Mūsā b. Kaʿb was with three thousand of al-Saffāḥ's troops. They besieged him there, and the people of al-Jazīrah had no leader to unite them. Then Isḥāq b. Muslim al-ʿUqaylī came to them from Armenia, having departed from it when news of Marwān's defeat reached him. The people of al-Jazīrah gathered around him, and he besieged Mūsā b. Kaʿb for about two months. Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Saffāḥ dispatched his brother Abū Jaʿfar with the troops that were with him at Wāsiṭ besieging Ibn Hubayrah. He marched and passed by Qarqīsiyā and al-Raqqah, whose inhabitants had already worn white. He proceeded toward Ḥarrān, and Isḥāq b. Muslim withdrew to al-Ruhāʾ, that being the year one hundred and thirty-three. Mūsā b. Kaʿb came out of Ḥarrān and met Abū Jaʿfar. Isḥāq b. Muslim sent his brother Bakkār b. Muslim to Rabīʿah at Dārā and Māridīn. The chief of Rabīʿah at that time was a man of the Ḥarūriyyah called Buraykah. Abū Jaʿfar made for them and met them, and they fought him fiercely. Buraykah was killed in the battle, and Bakkār returned to his brother Isḥāq at al-Ruhāʾ. Isḥāq left him there and marched to Sumaysāṭ with the bulk of his army. Abū Jaʿfar advanced to al-Ruhāʾ, and there were skirmishes between them and Bakkār. Al-Saffāḥ wrote to ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī, ordering him to march with his troops to Sumaysāṭ. He marched until he encamped opposite Isḥāq at Sumaysāṭ, while Isḥāq had sixty thousand men, with the Euphrates between them. Abū Jaʿfar approached from al-Ruhāʾ and besieged Isḥāq at Sumaysāṭ for seven months. Isḥāq used to say, "I have a pledge of allegiance on my neck, and I will not abandon it until I know that its holder has died or been killed." Abū Jaʿfar sent to him, saying, "Marwān has been killed." He replied, "Not until I am certain." When he became certain of his death, he sought peace and safe-conduct. They wrote to al-Saffāḥ about that, and he commanded them to grant him and those with him safe-conduct. They drew up a document to that effect among themselves, and Isḥāq went out to Abū Jaʿfar. He became one of his most favored companions, and the people of al-Jazīrah and al-Shām submitted. Abū al-ʿAbbās appointed his brother Abū Jaʿfar over al-Jazīrah, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, and he remained over them until he became caliph. It has also been said that ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAlī was the one who granted safe-conduct to Isḥāq b. Muslim.
