Translation

✧ Mention of the killing of Abū Salamah al-Khallāl and Sulaymān b. Kathīr We have already mentioned what happened with Abū Salamah in the affair of Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Saffāḥ and those of Banū Hāshim who were with him when they arrived in al-Kūfah, such that he became suspected by them, and al-Saffāḥ changed toward him while he was in his camp at Ḥammām Aʿyan. Then he moved away from him to al-Madīnah al-Hāshimiyyah and settled in the palace of governance there, while being ill-disposed toward Abū Salamah. He wrote to Abū Muslim informing him of his opinion of him and of the treachery he had intended. Abū Muslim wrote back to him: "If the Commander of the Faithful has learned of that from him, let him kill him." Dāwūd b. ʿAlī said to al-Saffāḥ: "Do not do it, O Commander of the Faithful, for Abū Muslim would use it as an argument against you, and the people of Khurāsān who are with you are his companions, and his standing among them is what it is. Rather, write to Abū Muslim so that he sends someone to kill him." So he wrote to him, and Abū Muslim sent Mirār b. Anas al-Ḍabbī to kill him. He arrived before al-Saffāḥ and informed him of the reason for his coming. Al-Saffāḥ ordered a crier, who proclaimed: "The Commander of the Faithful is pleased with Abū Salamah and has summoned him and clothed him." Then he entered upon him after that one night and remained with him until most of the night had passed. Then he departed to his dwelling alone, and Mirār b. Anas and those with him from his helpers confronted him and killed him, and they said: "The Khawārij killed him." Then the next day he was brought out, and Yaḥyā b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī prayed over him, and he was buried in al-Madīnah al-Hāshimiyyah near al-Kūfah. Sulaymān b. al-Muhājir al-Bajalī said: "Indeed the vizier, the vizier of the family of Muḥammad, has perished; so whoever hates you has become vizier." Abū Salamah used to be called "Vizier of the family of Muḥammad," and Abū Muslim "Amīr of the family of Muḥammad." When Abū Salamah was killed, al-Saffāḥ sent his brother Abū Jaʿfar to Abū Muslim. When he arrived before Abū Muslim, ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan al-Aʿraj and Sulaymān b. Kathīr accompanied him on the way. Sulaymān b. Kathīr said to ʿUbayd Allāh: "O you, we were hoping that your affair would be completed, so when you wish, summon us to what you want." ʿUbayd Allāh suspected that it was a secret test from Abū Muslim, so he went to Abū Muslim and informed him, fearing that if he did not tell him, he would kill him. Abū Muslim summoned Sulaymān b. Kathīr and said to him: "Do you remember the Imam's words to me: 'Whomever you suspect, kill him'?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then I suspect you." He said: "I adjure you by God!" He said: "Do not adjure me, for you are harboring treachery against the Imam," and he ordered his neck to be struck. Abū Jaʿfar returned to al-Saffāḥ and said: "You are not a caliph, and your affair is nothing if you leave Abū Muslim and do not kill him." He said: "And how?" He said: "By God, he does only what he wants." Abū al-ʿAbbās said: "Then keep it secret." It has also been said that Abū Jaʿfar only went to Abū Muslim before Abū Salamah was killed. The reason for that was that when al-Saffāḥ emerged, they discussed what Abū Salamah had done, and some of those present said: "Perhaps what he did was from the opinion of Abū Muslim." Al-Saffāḥ said: "If this was from his opinion, we shall indeed know calamity unless God averts it from us." And he sent his brother Abū Jaʿfar to Abū Muslim to learn his opinion. So he traveled to him and informed him of what had happened with Abū Salamah, and he sent Mirār b. Anas, who killed him.
