✧ Mention of the repudiation of Abū al-Ward and the people of Damascus In this year Abū al-Ward Mijzāʾa b. al-Kawthar b. Zufar b. al-Ḥārith al-Kilābī repudiated [the Abbasids]. He had been one of Marwān's companions and commanders. The reason for that was that when Marwān was defeated, Abū al-Ward took a stand in Qinnasrīn. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī arrived there, and Abū al-Ward swore allegiance to him and entered into what his troops had entered into. The sons of Maslama b. ʿAbd al-Malik were his neighbors in Bālis and al-Nāʿūra. A commander of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī's commanders came to Bālis and sent away the sons of Maslama and their women. Some of them complained about that to Abū al-Ward. He went out from a farm of his called Khusāf, killed that commander and those with him, and proclaimed the white and the repudiation of ʿAbd Allāh. He called the people of Qinnasrīn to that, and they all proclaimed the white. Al-Saffāḥ was at that time in al-Ḥīra, and ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī was occupied with the war against Ḥabīb b. Murra al-Murrī in the land of al-Balqāʾ, Ḥawrān, and al-Bathaniyya, as we have mentioned. When the proclamation of the white by the people of Qinnasrīn and their repudiation reached ʿAbd Allāh, he made peace with Ḥabīb b. Murra and marched toward Qinnasrīn to meet Abū al-Ward. He passed by Damascus and left behind there Abū Ghānim ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Ribʿī al-Ṭāʾī with four thousand men. In Damascus were ʿAbd Allāh's family, the mothers of his children, and his baggage. When he reached Ḥimṣ, the people of Damascus broke their allegiance to him and proclaimed the white. They rose with ʿUthmān b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā b. Surāqa al-Azdī and met Abū Ghānim and those with him. They routed him and killed a great number of his companions. They plundered the baggage that ʿAbd Allāh had left behind, but they did not harm his family. They united in opposition. ʿAbd Allāh marched on. A group of the people of Qinnasrīn had gathered with Abū al-Ward, and they wrote to those adjacent to them among the people of Ḥimṣ and Tadmur. Thousands of them came, led by Abū Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Yazīd b. Muʿāwiya. They called to him and said: "This is the Sufyānī who was spoken of." They numbered about forty thousand and encamped at Marj al-Akhram. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī approached them and sent against them his brother ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. ʿAlī with ten thousand. Abū al-Ward was the one directing the army of Qinnasrīn and in charge of the fighting. He engaged them in battle, and killing became heavy on both sides. ʿAbd al-Ṣamad and those with him were routed, thousands of them were killed, and he joined his brother ʿAbd Allāh. ʿAbd Allāh came forward with him and a group of commanders, and they met a second time at Marj al-Akhram. They fought a fierce battle. ʿAbd Allāh stood firm, and the companions of Abū al-Ward were routed. Abū al-Ward stood firm with about five hundred of his people and companions, and they were all killed. Abū Muḥammad and those with him fled until they reached Tadmur. ʿAbd Allāh granted safety to the people of Qinnasrīn, and they donned black, swore allegiance, and entered into obedience to him. Then he turned back to the people of Damascus because of their proclamation of the white against him. When he drew near them, the people fled, and there was no fighting from them. ʿAbd Allāh granted safety to its people, and they swore allegiance to him, and he did not punish them for what they had done. Abū Muḥammad al-Sufyānī remained hidden and fleeing, and he reached the land of the Hijaz (and remained thus until the days of al-Manṣūr). Ziyād b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥārithī, al-Manṣūr's governor, learned of his location. He sent horsemen against him, and they fought him and killed him, and took two of his sons as captives. Ziyād sent the head of Abū Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Sufyānī and his two sons. Al-Manṣūr released the two and granted them safety. It is said that the war between ʿAbd Allāh and Abū al-Ward took place at the end of Dhū al-Ḥijja in the year one hundred thirty-three.
