✧ Al-Khalīl b. Aḥmad, Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Farāhīdī al-Azdī al-Naḥwī al-Baṣrī: It is not known that anyone was named Aḥmad after the Messenger of God ﷺ before Aḥmad the father of al-Khalīl. Al-Khalīl heard from a group of people, and he excelled in the science of language and the composition of prosody. Ḥammād b. Zayd and al-Naḍr b. Shumayl narrated from him. Al-Khalīl was in al-Baṣrah, which is more likely correct, and al-Khalīl was singular in the knowledge of Arabic, devout, and abstemious regarding the world. Sulaymān b. ʿAlī al-Hāshimī wrote to him summoning him to teach his son by day and keep him company by night, and he sent him a thousand dinars to aid him in his condition. He brought out to the messenger a basket containing dry pieces of bread, showed them to him, and said to him: “As long as I find these pieces of bread, I am in no need of him or of anyone else.” He returned the thousand dinars and said to the messenger: “Convey peace to the amir and tell him: I have grown accustomed to a people and they have grown accustomed to me. I sit with them the length of my day and part of my night, and it is unbecoming for one like me to cut off a custom that his brethren have become accustomed to.” And he wrote to him these verses: Convey to Sulaymān that I am in ample ease And in wealth, except that I possess no property. And between wealth and poverty there is a station Joined to new cloth, not worn-out. Generous in myself, for I do not see anyone Who dies in jest, nor remains in one state. Poverty is in the soul, not in wealth, we know it, And likewise wealth is in the soul, not in property. Provision comes by decree; weakness does not diminish it, Nor does the contriving of a schemer increase it for you. Every person is held in pledge by the cords of death, So attend to your own state, for I am attending to mine. It has also been narrated to us that the one who sent to him was Sulaymān b. Ḥabīb al-Muhallabī, who sent to him from the land of al-Sind. Al-Khalīl was in al-Baṣrah, and this is more likely correct, and it was said: from the land of al-Ahwāz. Then the matter resulted in al-Khalīl becoming an agent for Yazīd b. Ḥātim al-Muhallabī, who used to provide him two hundred dirhams each month. Al-Thawrī said: We gathered in Makkah, the litterateurs of every horizon, and we discussed the affair of the scholars. The people of each town began to extol their scholars and describe them, until mention of al-Khalīl came up, and there remained none of them but said: Al-Khalīl is the most intelligent of the Arabs, and he is the key to the sciences and their channel. Naṣr b. ʿAlī al-Jahḍamī said, on the authority of his father: Al-Khalīl was among the most ascetic of people, the loftiest in soul, and the most abstinent. Kings used to seek him out and present themselves to him so that he might obtain something from them, but he would not do that. He used to live from a garden his father had left him. ʿUbayd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿĀʾishah said: Al-Khalīl used to make the pilgrimage one year and go on a military expedition the next, until he died. Al-Naḍr b. Shumayl said: We have not seen anyone toward whose knowledge people turned and sought what he had more humble than al-Khalīl. Muḥammad b. Sallām said: I heard our shaykhs say: There was no one among the Arabs after the Companions more intelligent than al-Khalīl or more comprehensive, and there was no one among the non-Arabs more intelligent than Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ or more comprehensive. Al-Naḍr said: I heard al-Khalīl say: Days are three: a past day, which is yesterday; a witnessed day, which is today; and a promised day, which is tomorrow. Al-Khalīl said: Three things make misfortunes easier: the passing of nights, a beautiful woman, and conversing with men. He recited about himself: Suffices you from your time this sustenance, How much sustenance is there for one who dies? Budayl b. Maysarah al-ʿUqaylī: He transmitted from Anas and others, and he was devout, given to prolonged weeping. He kept weeping until his sight went. Muḥammad b. Abī al-Qāsim informed us, with a chain of transmission, from Sayyār, who said: Mahdī b. Maymūn said: On the night Budayl died, I saw someone saying: Verily Budayl has become one of the inhabitants of Paradise. Shaybah b. Niṣāḥ b. Sarjis b. Yaʿqūb al-Qārrī, client of Umm Salamah, wife of the Prophet ﷺ. He died in this year. In this year died Abū Jaʿfar Yazīd b. al-Qaʿqāʿ al-Qāriʾ, client of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās al-Makhzūmī, in al-Madīnah, and it was said: Sumayy, client of Abū Bakr b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, in Qudayd. Muḥammad b. al-Munkadir b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Hudayr, Abū ʿAbd Allāh: Al-Munkadir entered upon ʿĀʾishah, and she said: “Do you have a child?” He said: “No.” She said: “If I had ten thousand dirhams, I would give them to you.” No evening came before Muʿāwiyah sent her wealth, and she said: “How quickly I have been tested.” She sent to al-Munkadir ten thousand, and he bought with it a slave woman, who was the mother of Muḥammad, Abū Bakr, and ʿUmar, and they were the devotees of al-Madīnah. Muḥammad heard from Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh, Umaymah bt. Ruqayyah, al-Ḥasan, ʿUrwah, and Saʿīd b. Jubayr, among others. He died in al-Madīnah. From Ibn Wahb, who said: Ibn Zayd informed me, saying: Ṣafwān b. Sulaym came to Muḥammad b. al-Munkadir while he was in the throes of death, and said: “O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, it is as if death has distressed you.” He said: He kept making the matter light for him until it was as if there were lamps in his face. Then Muḥammad said: “If you could see what I am in, your eye would be comforted.” Then he passed away, may God have mercy on him. Muḥammad b. Sūqah, Abū Bakr al-Bazzāz, client of Bujaylah: He was a cloth merchant. He met Anas b. Mālik and Abū al-Ṭufayl, and he narrated from the Successors. Sufyān used to say: There remains no one through whom the people of al-Kūfah are defended except Ibn Sūqah. He had one hundred and twenty thousand, and he gave it forward. He used to say: The most beloved of things to me is bringing joy to a believer. Faḍl b. ʿIyāḍ said, from Muḥammad b. Sūqah, who said: Two matters, if we were not punished except for them, we would deserve God's punishment for them: one of us is given an increase of something of this world and rejoices with a joy that God knows he never rejoiced with for anything increased in his religion; and he is deprived of something of this world and grieves over it with a grief that God knows he never grieved over anything diminished in his religion. From Mahdī b. Sābiq, who said: The nephew of Muḥammad b. Sūqah asked him for something, and he wept. He said to him: “O uncle, if I had known that my request would reach you to this extent, I would not have asked you.” He said: “I did not weep because of your request; rather I wept because I did not initiate giving to you before your asking.” Muḥammad b. Juḥādah al-Awdī, client of the Banū Awd: He narrated from Abū Ṣāliḥ, and al-Thawrī narrated from him. From Sufyān, who said: Muḥammad b. Juḥādah was among the worshippers, and it used to be said that he slept only the least part of the night. He said: A woman among his neighbors saw as if robes were distributed among the people of their mosque. When the distributor reached Muḥammad b. Juḥādah, he called for a sealed basket and took out from it a yellow robe. She said: No one rose for it from al-Baṣrah, so he clothed him with it and said: “This is yours for the length of your night vigil.” That woman said: I used to see him after that and imagine it upon him. Mālik b. Dīnār, Abū Yaḥyā, client of a woman of the Banū Sāmah b. Luʾayy: He was trustworthy, wrote copies of the Qurʾan, and was abstemious regarding the world. He transmitted hadith from Anas. Ḥusayn b. Jaʿfar b. Sulaymān al-Ḍubaʿī said: I heard my father say: The governor of al-Baṣrah passed by Mālik swaggering, and Mālik shouted at him: “Reduce this gait of yours, for they are his servants by it.” He said: “Leave him; I do not think you know me.” Mālik said to him: “And who knows you better than I? As for your beginning, you were a putrid drop; as for your end, you are a filthy carcass; and between that you carry excrement.” The governor lowered his head and walked on. From Jaʿfar b. Sulaymān, from Mālik b. Dīnār: He used to be seen on the Day of Tarwiyah in al-Baṣrah and on the Day of ʿArafah at ʿArafāt. Al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī al-Ḥulwānī said: Thieves entered the house of Mālik b. Dīnār and found nothing in the house. They wanted to leave his home, and Mālik said: “Would it harm you to pray two rakʿahs?” Yazīd b. Abān al-Raqāshī: He transmitted from Anas. He was a worshipper, given to much weeping and night vigil, to the point that Thābit al-Bunānī said of him: I have not seen anyone more patient in long standing and vigil than Yazīd b. Abān al-Raqāshī. After this he used to say: Alas! The worshippers have preceded me, and I have been cut off!
