✧ Mention of the killing of Nabātah b. Ḥanẓalah In this year, Nabātah b. Ḥanẓalah, the governor of Yazīd b. Hubayrah over Jurjān, was killed. Yazīd b. Hubayrah had sent him to Naṣr, so he came to Fārs and Iṣbahān, then marched to al-Rayy and proceeded to Jurjān, while Naṣr was at Qūmis, as previously mentioned. It was said to him: 'Qūmis cannot sustain us,' so he marched to Jurjān and encamped there with Nabātah, and they dug a trench around themselves. Qaḥṭabah advanced to Jurjān in Dhū al-Qaʿdah. Qaḥṭabah said: 'O people of Khurāsān, do you know to whom you are marching and whom you are fighting? You are only fighting the remnant of a people who burned the House of Allah, the Exalted!' Al-Ḥasan b. Qaḥṭabah was in command of his father's vanguard. He sent a detachment to the outpost of Nabātah, which was commanded by a man called Dhuʾayb. They attacked them at night and killed Dhuʾayb and seventy of his companions, then returned to al-Ḥasan. Qaḥṭabah arrived and encamped facing Nabātah and the people of Syria in a multitude the like of which people had never seen. When the people of Khurāsān saw them, they were awed by them to the point that they spoke of it and made it known. Their words reached Qaḥṭabah, so he stood among them and said: 'O people of Khurāsān, these lands belonged to your forefathers, and they used to be granted victory over their enemy because of their justice and good conduct, until they changed and wronged, so Allah—Mighty and Majestic—became angry with them, stripped them of their authority, and set over them the most despised nation that was then on earth, and they conquered their lands. In that, they used to rule with justice, fulfill covenants, and aid the oppressed. Then they changed and altered, and deviated in judgment, and frightened the people of righteousness and piety from the family of the Messenger of Allah; so He set you over them to exact retribution from them through you, so that you might be a severer punishment, because you seek them for vengeance. The Imam has covenanted to me that you will meet them in a multitude like this, and Allah—Mighty and Majestic—will grant you victory over them, and you will rout them and kill them.' They met at the beginning of Dhū al-Ḥijjah in the year thirty, on Friday. Qaḥṭabah said to them before the fighting: 'The Imam informed us that you will be granted victory over your enemy on this day of this month.' His son al-Ḥasan was on his right wing. They fought a severe battle, and Nabātah was killed, and the people of Syria were routed, and ten thousand of them were killed. He sent Nabātah's head to Abū Muslim.
