✧ Mention of Qaḥṭabah’s arrival from the presence of the Imām Ibrāhīm In this year, Qaḥṭabah b. Shabīb came to Abū Muslim from the presence of Ibrāhīm the Imām, bringing with him his banner which Ibrāhīm had tied for him. Abū Muslim sent him forth in his vanguard, joined the armies to him, and delegated to him dismissal and appointment, and wrote to the troops ordering them to hear and obey him. Mention of Qaḥṭabah’s march to Naysābūr When Shaybān the Khārijite and the two sons of al-Kirmānī were killed, as has preceded, and Naṣr b. Sayyār fled from Marw, and Abū Muslim gained control of Khurāsān, he sent governors over the lands. He appointed Sibāʿ b. al-Nuʿmān al-Azdī over Samarqand, Abū Dāwūd Khālid b. Ibrāhīm over Ṭakhāristān, and Muḥammad b. al-Ashʿath over al-Ṭabasayn. He placed Mālik b. al-Haytham over his police, and he sent Qaḥṭabah to Ṭūs with a number of commanders, among them: Abū ʿAwn ʿAbd al-Malik b. Yazīd, Khālid b. Barmak, ʿUthmān b. Nahīk, Khāzim b. Khuzaymah, and others. Qaḥṭabah met those at Ṭūs and defeated them. Those of them who died in the crush were more than those who were killed, and the number of dead reached some ten-odd thousand. Abū Muslim sent al-Qāsim b. Mujāshiʿ to Naysābūr by the main road, and he wrote to Qaḥṭabah ordering him to fight Tamīm b. Naṣr b. Sayyār, al-Nābiʾ b. Suwayd, and those who sought refuge with them from the people of Khurāsān. The companions of Shaybān b. Salamah the Khārijite had joined Naṣr. Abū Muslim sent ʿAlī b. Maʿqil with ten thousand men to Tamīm b. Naṣr, and ordered him to be with Qaḥṭabah. Qaḥṭabah marched to al-Sawdhaqān, which was the camp of Tamīm b. Naṣr and al-Nābiʾ. He had drawn up his companions in ranks and advanced against them. He called them to the Book of God—mighty and majestic—and the Sunnah of His Prophet ﷺ and to satisfaction from the family of Muḥammad. They did not respond to him, so he fought them a fierce fight. Tamīm b. Naṣr was killed in the battle, and a great slaughter took place among his companions. Their camp was plundered. The number of those with him had been thirty thousand. Al-Nābiʾ b. Suwayd fled and fortified himself in the city. Qaḥṭabah besieged him, they breached its wall, entered the city, and killed al-Nābiʾ and those with him. The news reached Naṣr b. Sayyār in Naysābūr of the killing of his son. When Qaḥṭabah gained control of their camp, he sent to Khālid b. Barmak what he had seized in it, and he himself marched to Naysābūr. This reached Naṣr b. Sayyār, and he fled from it with those with him. He halted at Qūmis, and his companions dispersed from him. He went to Nabātah b. Ḥanẓalah in Jurjān. Qaḥṭabah entered Naysābūr with his troops and stayed there during Ramaḍān and Shawwāl.
