Translation
✧ Mention of the killing of the two sons of al-Karmānī In this year Abū Muslim killed ʿAlī and ʿUthmān, the two sons of al-Karmānī. The reason for that was that Abū Muslim had sent Mūsā b. Kaʿb to Abīward, and he conquered it and wrote to Abū Muslim about that. He also sent Abū Dāwūd to Balkh, where Ziyād b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Qushayrī was. When news reached him that Abū Dāwūd intended to march on Balkh, he set out with the people of Balkh, Tirmidh, and others from the districts of Ṭukhāristān toward al-Jūzjān. When Abū Dāwūd drew near them, they withdrew in defeat to Tirmidh. Abū Dāwūd entered the city of Balkh, and Abū Muslim wrote to him ordering him to come to him. He sent in his place Yaḥyā b. Nuʿaym Abū al-Maylāʾ over Balkh. When Yaḥyā arrived at the city of Balkh, Ziyād b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān wrote to him proposing that he return and that they join forces. He agreed to that, so Ziyād returned, along with Muslim b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muslim al-Bāhilī, ʿĪsā b. Zurʿa al-Sulamī, the people of Balkh and Tirmidh, the kings of Ṭukhāristān, and those beyond the river and on this side of it. They encamped one farsakh from Balkh. Yaḥyā b. Nuʿaym went out to them with those who were with him, and their word became one: Muḍar, Rabīʿa, al-Yaman, and the non-Arabs with them, to fight the Musawwida. They appointed as their leader Muqātil b. Ḥayyān al-Nabaṭī, disliking that it be one of the three factions. Abū Muslim ordered Abū Dāwūd to return, so he advanced with those with him until they gathered at the Sarajnān river. Ziyād and his companions had sent Abū Saʿīd al-Qurashī as a vanguard to prevent Abū Dāwūd's men from coming upon them from behind. Abū Dāwūd's banners were black. When Abū Dāwūd and Ziyād and their companions fought, Abū Saʿīd ordered his men to attack Ziyād and his companions, so they came upon them from behind. When Ziyād and those with him saw the black banners and standards of Abū Saʿīd, they thought it was an ambush for Abū Dāwūd and fled. Abū Dāwūd pursued them, and most of Ziyād's companions fell into the Sarajnān river, and most of their men who had lagged behind were killed. Abū Dāwūd occupied their camp and seized all that was in it. Ziyād and Yaḥyā and those with them went on to Tirmidh. Abū Dāwūd confiscated the wealth of those killed and those who fled, and Balkh submitted to him. Abū Muslim wrote to him ordering him to come to him, and he appointed al-Naḍr b. Ṣubayḥ al-Murrī over Balkh. Abū Dāwūd came to Abū Muslim, and they agreed to separate ʿAlī and ʿUthmān, the two sons of al-Karmānī. Abū Muslim sent ʿUthmān as governor over Balkh. When he arrived there, he appointed al-Farāfiṣa b. Ẓuhayr al-ʿAbsī as his deputy over Balkh. The Muḍarīs from Tirmidh came against them, led by Muslim b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Bāhilī. They and ʿUthmān's companions met and fought a fierce battle, and ʿUthmān's companions were defeated. Muslim gained control of Balkh. The news reached ʿUthmān and al-Naḍr b. Ṣubayḥ while they were at Marw al-Rūdh, and they advanced toward them. The companions of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān fled that very night, but al-Naḍr did not pursue them deeply, hoping they would escape. ʿUthmān's companions encountered them and fought a fierce battle, but al-Naḍr was not with them, so ʿUthmān's companions were defeated and many of them were killed. Abū Dāwūd returned from Marw to Balkh, and Abū Muslim marched with ʿAlī b. al-Karmānī to Naysābūr. Abū Muslim and Abū Dāwūd agreed that Abū Muslim would kill ʿAlī and Abū Dāwūd would kill ʿUthmān. When Abū Dāwūd arrived in Balkh, he sent ʿUthmān as governor over the mountain with those from the people of Marw who were with him. When he left Balkh, Abū Dāwūd followed him, seized him and his companions, and imprisoned them all. Then he struck off their necks in patient execution. On that same day, Abū Muslim killed ʿAlī b. al-Karmānī. Abū Muslim had ordered him to name his close associates so that he might appoint them as governors and order rewards and robes of honor for them. He named them for him, and he killed them all.
