✧ Mention of the killing of Shaybān al-Ḥarūrī In this year, Shaybān b. Salama al-Ḥarūrī was killed. The reason for his killing was that he and ʿAlī b. al-Kirmānī had united in fighting Naṣr, because Shaybān opposed Naṣr since he was one of the agents of Marwān, and Shaybān held the view of the Khawārij, while Ibn al-Kirmānī opposed Naṣr because Naṣr had killed his father al-Kirmānī, and because Naṣr was a Muḍarī whereas Ibn al-Kirmānī was a Yamānī, and between the two factions there was the well-known tribal partisanship. When Ibn al-Kirmānī made peace with Abū Muslim on the basis previously mentioned and separated from Shaybān, Shaybān withdrew from Marw, realizing that he could not withstand war against the two of them, while Naṣr had fled to Sarkhas. When the matter became settled for Abū Muslim, he sent to Shaybān inviting him to pledge allegiance. Shaybān said: "I invite you to pledge allegiance to me." Abū Muslim sent to him: "If you do not enter into our affair, then depart from the place where you are staying." Shaybān sent to Ibn al-Kirmānī seeking his aid, but he refused. So Shaybān marched to Sarkhas, and a great number of Bakr b. Wāʾil gathered to him. Abū Muslim sent to him nine men from the Azd, inviting him and asking him to refrain, but he seized the messengers and imprisoned them. Abū Muslim wrote to Bassām b. Ibrāhīm, a client of Banū Layth, at Abīward, ordering him to march against Shaybān and fight him. He marched against him and fought him, and Shaybān was defeated. Bassām pursued him until he entered the city, and he killed Shaybān and a number of Bakr b. Wāʾil. It was said to Abū Muslim: "Bassām has apostatized a second time, and he kills the innocent along with the sick." So he summoned him, and he came to him, leaving a man in his place over his army. When Shaybān was killed, a man from Bakr b. Wāʾil passed by Abū Muslim's messengers and killed them. It is said: Abū Muslim dispatched an army of his own against Shaybān, commanded by Khuzayma b. Khāzim and Bassām b. Ibrāhīm.
