✧ Mention of the flight of Naṣr b. Sayyār from Marw Then Abū Muslim sent Lāhiz b. Qurayẓ in a group to Naṣr b. Sayyār, inviting him to the Book of God—mighty and majestic is He—and to satisfaction from the family of Muḥammad. When he saw what came to him from the Yamaniyya, the Rabīʿiyya, and the non-Arabs, and that he had no strength against them, he showed acceptance of what he brought to him, and that he would come to him and pledge allegiance to him. He began to delay them because of what they were about to do of treachery and flight, until evening came. He commanded his companions to go out that night to a place where they would be safe. Then Sālim b. Aḥwaz said to him: "It is not possible for us to go out tonight, but we will go out tomorrow night." When the next day came, Abū Muslim arrayed his companions and his battalions until after noon. He sent Lāhiz b. Qurayẓ back to Naṣr with a group. They entered upon Naṣr. He said: "How quickly you have returned!" Lāhiz b. Qurayẓ said to him: "You must do that." Naṣr said: "If it must be so, then I shall perform ablution and go out to him, and send to Abū Muslim. If this is his opinion and his command, I shall come to him, and I shall prepare myself until my messenger comes." Naṣr rose. When he rose, Lāhiz b. Qurayẓ recited: "Indeed the chiefs are plotting against you to kill you, so leave; indeed I am to you of the sincere advisers." Naṣr entered his dwelling and informed them that he was waiting for the return of his messenger from Abū Muslim. When night fell upon him, he went out from behind his chamber, accompanied by his son Tamīm, al-Ḥakam b. Numayla al-Numayrī, and his wife al-Marzubāna, and they departed in flight. When Lāhiz and his companions found him slow in coming, they entered his dwelling and found that he had fled. When this reached Abū Muslim, he marched to Naṣr's camp and seized his trusted companions and their warriors, and bound them. Among them were Sālim b. Aḥwaz, the commander of Naṣr's guard; al-Bakhtarī, his scribe; two sons of his; Yūnus b. ʿAbda wayh; Muḥammad b. Qaṭan; Mujāhid b. Yaḥyā b. Ḥuḍayn; and others. He secured them with iron, and they remained in prison with him. Abū Muslim and Ibn al-Kirmānī went out that night in pursuit of Naṣr. They overtook his wife, whom he had left behind as he went on. Then Abū Muslim and Ibn al-Kirmānī returned to Marw, while Naṣr proceeded to Sarkhas, where three thousand men gathered with him. When Abū Muslim returned, he asked those whom he had sent to Naṣr: "What was it that made Naṣr suspicious so that he fled?" They said: "We do not know." He said: "Did any of you say anything?" They said: "Lāhiz recited this verse: 'Indeed the chiefs are plotting against you.'" He said: "This is what induced him to flee." Then he said: "O Lāhiz, you have introduced corruption into the religion!" Then he killed him. Abū Muslim consulted Abū Ṭalḥa regarding Naṣr's companions. He said: "Make your whip the sword and your prison the grave." So Abū Muslim killed them; their number was twenty-four men. As for Naṣr, he proceeded from Sarkhas to Ṭūs and stayed there fifteen days, and at Sarkhas one day. Then he proceeded to Naysābūr and stayed there. Ibn al-Kirmānī entered Marw with Abū Muslim and followed his opinion and made a pact with him upon it. (Yaḥyā b. Ḥuḍayn: with a ḍammah on the undotted ḥāʾ, a fatḥah on the dotted ḍād, and ending with nūn).
