Translation
✧ In this year there occurred the plague of Salm b. Qutaybah. Al-Aṣmaʿī said: Every day, along the road of al-Mirbad, eleven thousand biers would pass by. Al-Madāʾinī said: This plague was in Rajab and intensified in Ramaḍān. In the lane of al-Mirbad, ten thousand funerals were counted every day for several days, and it abated in Shawwāl. Al-Aṣmaʿī said: On the first day, seventy thousand died; on the second, more than seventy thousand; and on the third day, the people awoke dead. Salm b. Qutaybah was governor of al-Baṣrah. When he stood on the pulpit, he began looking right and left but saw no one he recognized. He would lock the door upon the dead for fear that dogs would eat them, and a crier would call out: 'Come to the aid of the family of so-and-so, for the dogs have eaten them.'
