Chapter mentioning a group of the prophets of the Israelites after Mūsā (peace be upon him)
مُلَخَّصُ قِصَّةِ شَمْوِيلَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ هُوَ شَمْوِيلُ - وَيُقَالُ: أَشْمَوِيلُ - بْنُ بَالَى بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ يَرْخَامَ بْنِ أَلْيَهْوَ بْنِ تَهْوِ بْنِ صُوفَ بْنِ عَلْقَمَةَ بْنِ مَاحِثَ بْنِ عَمُوصَا بْنِ عِزْرِيَا. قَالَ مُقَاتِلٌ: هُوَ مِنْ ذُرِّيَّةِ هَارُونَ، وَمَعْنَى أَشْمَوِيلَ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ دُعَائِي وَذَلِكَ أَنَّ أُمَّهُ وَلَدَتْهُ وَهِيَ عَجُوزٌ بَعْدَمَا دَعَتِ اللَّهَ أَنْ يُرْزَقَهَا الْوَلَدَ. وَهُوَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَهُ اللَّهُ إِلَى بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ لَمَّا دَعَوْا أَنْ يَبْعَثَ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ مَلِكًا أَوْ نَبِيًّا يُقَاتِلُونَ مَعَهُ لَمَّا أُخِذَ التَّابُوتُ مِنْهُمْ، وَقَدْ قَصَدَهُمْ جَالُوتُ بِجُنُودِهِ، وَفِي عَهْدِهِ بَعَثَ اللَّهُ طَالُوتَ مَلِكًا يُقَاتِلُونَ مَعَهُ جَالُوتَ، وَعَادَ إِلَيْهِمُ التَّابُوتُ تَحْمِلُهُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ، وَقَتَلَ - فِي عَهْدِهِ أَيْضًا - دَاوُدُ جَالُوتَ وَآتَاهُ اللَّهُ الْمُلْكَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَعَلَّمَهُ مِمَّا يَشَاءُ.
Translation
✧ Summary of the story of Shamwīl ﷺ He is Shamwīl – and it is said: Ashmūʾīl – b. Bālā b. ʿAlqamah b. Yarkhām b. Alyahwā b. Tahwā b. Ṣūfā b. ʿAlqamah b. Māḥith b. ʿAmūṣā b. ʿIzriyā. Muqātil said: He was of the progeny of Hārūn, and the meaning of Ashmūʾīl is "Allah heard my supplication," and that is because his mother gave birth to him when she was an old woman, after she supplicated Allah to grant her a child. He is the one whom Allah sent to the Children of Israel when they called upon Allah to send them a king or a prophet with whom they would fight, when the Ark was taken from them, and Jālūt had come against them with his armies. And in his time Allah sent Ṭālūt as king, with whom they would fight Jālūt, and the Ark returned to them carried by the angels. And in his time also Dāwūd killed Jālūt, and Allah gave him the kingdom and wisdom and taught him of what He willed.
