Translation

✧ Among his affair with his people was what Allah recounted in His Book. Allah the Exalted said in His Mighty Book: “Have you not regarded the council of the Children of Israel after Mūsā, when they said to a prophet of theirs: ‘Send us a king, and we will fight in the way of Allah.’ He said: ‘Would you perhaps, if fighting is prescribed for you, not fight?’ They said: ‘Why should we not fight in the way of Allah, when we have been expelled from our homes and our children?’ But when fighting was prescribed for them, they turned away, except a few of them; and Allah knows the evildoers. And their prophet said to them: ‘Allah has sent you Ṭālūt as king.’ They said: ‘How can kingship be his over us, when we have better right to kingship than he, and he has not been given amplitude of wealth?’ He said: ‘Allah has chosen him over you, and increased him broadly in knowledge and body. Allah gives His kingship to whomever He wills; and Allah is All-embracing, All-knowing.’ And their prophet said to them: ‘The sign of his kingship is that the Ark will come to you, in it a Shekhinah from your Lord, and a remnant of what the family of Mūsā and the family of Hārūn left behind, borne by the angels. Surely in that is a sign for you, if you are believers.’ And when Ṭālūt set out with the troops, he said: ‘Allah is testing you with a river. Whoever drinks from it is not of me, and whoever does not taste it is of me, except him who scoops a scoop with his hand.’ But they drank from it, except a few of them. Then, when he crossed it, he and those who believed with him, they said: ‘We have no power today against Jālūt and his troops.’ Those who thought they would meet Allah said: ‘How many a small company has overcome a numerous company by Allah’s leave; and Allah is with the patient.’ And when they went forth against Jālūt and his troops, they said: ‘Our Lord, pour out patience upon us, and make our feet firm, and help us against the disbelieving people.’ So they routed them by Allah’s leave, and Dāwūd killed Jālūt, and Allah gave him kingship and wisdom, and taught him of what He willed. Were it not for Allah’s driving back the people, some by means of others, the earth would have been corrupted; but Allah is bountiful to all beings.” [al-Baqarah: 246–251]
