✧ Account of the affair of Abū Ḥamzah al-Khārijī with Ṭālib al-Ḥaqq The name of Abū Ḥamzah al-Khārijī was al-Mukhtār b. ʿAwf al-Azdī al-Sulamī al-Baṣrī. The beginning of his affair was that he was one of the Ibāḍī Khārijites. Every year he would go to Makkah, calling the people to oppose Marwān b. Muḥammad. He continued in that way until he met ʿAbd Allāh b. Yaḥyā, known as Ṭālib al-Ḥaqq, at the end of the year 128 [AH]. He said to him: "O man, I hear good speech, and I see that you call to truth, so come with me, for I am a man obeyed among his people." He set out until he reached Ḥaḍramawt, and Abū Ḥamzah gave him the oath of allegiance for the caliphate, calling for opposition to Marwān and the family of Marwān. Abū Ḥamzah once passed by the mine of Banū Sulaym, where the governor was Kathīr b. ʿAbd Allāh. He heard the speech of Abū Ḥamzah and flogged him with forty lashes. When Abū Ḥamzah took possession of al-Madīnah and conquered it, Kathīr went into hiding until what happened between the two of them happened.
