Translation

✧ Mention of the people of Homs breaking their pledge In this year, the people of Homs broke their pledge against Marwan. The reason for that was that when Marwan returned to Harran after finishing with the people of Syria, he stayed for three months, then the people of Homs broke their pledge against him. The one who called them to that was Thabit b. Nu'aym, who corresponded with them. The people of Homs sent to those of Kalb who were in Tadmor, and al-Asbagh b. Dhu'ala al-Kalbi and his sons came to them, along with Mu'awiya al-Saksaki, who was the horseman of the people of Syria, and others besides them, about a thousand of their horsemen. They entered on the night of the breaking of the fast. Marwan hastened to march against them, and with him were Ibrahim the deposed and Sulayman b. Hisham. He had granted them safety and was honoring them. He reached them two days after the breaking of the fast, and its people had already barricaded its gates. He surrounded the city and stood opposite one of its gates. His crier called out to those at the gate: 'What called you to break the pledge?' They said: 'We are in obedience to you; we have not broken it.' He said: 'Then open the gate.' So they opened the gate, and 'Umar b. al-Waddah entered it with the Waddahiyya, who were about three thousand. Those in the city fought them, and Marwan's cavalry overwhelmed them. Those inside came out through the gate of Tadmor, and those of Marwan's companions who were stationed there fought them and killed most of those who came out. Al-Asbagh b. Dhu'ala and his son Furafisa escaped. Marwan killed a group of their captives and crucified five hundred of the slain around the city, and he demolished about a bowshot of its wall. It is said that the conquest of Homs and the demolition of its wall took place in the year twenty-eight.
