Translation

✧ Mention of al-Ḥārith b. Surayj’s return to Marw In this year al-Ḥārith returned to Marw, having stayed with the polytheists for a period. The reason for his return has already been mentioned. His arrival at Marw was in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of the year 127. The people met him at Kushmayhan. When he met them, he said: “My eye has not been cooled since I left until this day of mine, and the cooling of my eye is only that God be obeyed.” Naṣr met him, lodged him, and granted him fifty dirhams every day. He used to confine himself to one kind [of food]. Naṣr released his family and children, and offered him to appoint him [to office] and give him a hundred thousand dinars, but he did not accept. He sent to Naṣr: “I have nothing to do with this world and its pleasures. I only ask you for the Book of God, acting according to the Sunnah, and employing the people of goodness. If you do that, I will help you against your enemy.” Al-Ḥārith sent to al-Karmānī: “If Naṣr grants me acting according to the Book and what I asked him, I will support him and uphold the command of God. If he does not, I will help you if you guarantee me upholding justice and the Sunnah.” He called the Banū Tamīm to himself. A large group of them and others responded to him; three thousand gathered around him. He said to Naṣr: “I only left this town thirteen years ago in disapproval of injustice, and you want me to [support] it.”
