Translation
✧ Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Qasrī al-Bajalī al-Yamānī: He was at Wāsiṭ, and it is said: at al-Kūfah, and we have mentioned the manner of his death in the events. Darrāj b. Samʿān, Abū al-Samḥ, client of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ: He heard from ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith b. Jazʾ. Al-Layth and Ibn Lahīʿah narrated from him. He used to tell stories in Egypt and say: I reached a time when, if we heard that a man had collected the Qurʾān, we would travel to him to look at him. Shumayṭ b. ʿAjlān, Abū ʿUbayd Allāh: He was a devout preacher. From ʿAbd Allāh b. Shumayṭ, from his father, that he used to say in his sermons: The believer says to himself: it is only three days. Yesterday has passed with what it contained, and tomorrow is your hope—perhaps you will not reach it. It is only this day of yours; if you are among the people of tomorrow, the Lord of tomorrow will bring tomorrow's provision. Between you and tomorrow is a day and a night in which many souls are snatched away; perhaps you will be the one snatched away in it. Sufficient for each day is its own concern. Then you have loaded upon your weak heart the concern of years and ages, the concern of dearness and cheapness, the concern of winter before it comes, the concern of summer before it comes. What have you left of your weak heart for the Hereafter? How strange is one who believes in the Abode of Life yet strives for the Abode of Delusion?! ʿAbd Allāh b. Ghālib al-Ḥarrānī: From al-Mughīrah b. Ḥabīb, who said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Ghālib al-Ḥarrānī said: When the enemy advanced against the evils of this world, by God, there was in it no argument for the intelligent. By God, were it not for my love of keeping vigil with my face upon the ground and pressing my forehead for You, O my Master, and moving my limbs in the darkness of the night—hoping for Your reward and the descent of Your good pleasure—I would have wished to part from this world and its people. He said: Then he broke the scabbard of his sword, advanced, and fought until he was killed. He said: He was carried from the battlefield while still breathing, and he died short of the army. When he was buried, they found from his grave the fragrance of musk. He said: A man among his brothers saw him in a dream and said: O Abū Firās, what have you done? He said: The best of deeds. He said: To what have you come? He said: To Paradise. He said: By what? He said: By sound certainty, long night prayer, and thirst in the midday heat. He said: And what is this pleasant fragrance that is found from your grave? He said: That is the fragrance of recitation and thirst. He said: I said: Counsel me. He said: Earn good for yourself; do not let the nights and days pass you by idly. ʿAbd Allāh b. Surayj, Abū Yaḥyā, client of Banū Nawfal b. ʿAbd Manāf: It is also said: client of Banū al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, and it is said: a client of Banū Makhzūm, and it is said: a client of Banū Layth. He was born during the caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb. He was a mourner, then became one of the famous and great singers. He was dark, ruddy, with blood showing through the skin, a basket-weaver; in his eye was a twist, and on his head was baldness. He was attached to ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaʿfar. Al-Kalbī mentioned from his father, who said: Ibn Surayj was effeminate, cross-eyed, with weak eyesight, and he was the most beautiful of people in singing. He sang in the time of ʿUthmān. Others said: The singer of the people of Makkah was Ibn Surayj, and the singer of the people of Madinah was Maʿbad. Al-Kumayt b. Zayd b. Khunays b. Mujālid: He was born in the year sixty. A leading and foremost poet, learned in language. He lived in the days of the Umayyads and did not reach the Abbasid state. He debated with Ḥammād the transmitter and silenced Ḥammād. He recited to Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik, who gave him much wealth. He recited to Khālid al-Qasrī, who gave him a hundred thousand dirhams. Muʿādh al-Hazzāʾ said: Al-Kumayt is the most poetic of the first and the last. His poetry reached five thousand two hundred eighty-nine verses. In this year died Saʿīd b. Abī Saʿīd al-Maqburī, and Mālik b. Dīnār the ascetic—though it is said he died in the year twenty-seven, and it is said in the year thirty. In this year died ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad b. Abī Bakr al-Ṣiddīq—though it is said in the year thirty-one. During the governorship of Yūsuf b. ʿUmar over Iraq died Abū Jamrah al-Ḍubaʿī, the companion of Ibn ʿAbbās. ( Jamrah: with jīm and unpointed rāʾ ). And Saʿīd b. Masrūq, according to one report, and Sulaymān b. Ḥabīb al-Muḥāribī, judge of Damascus.
