Translation

✧ This year began with the caliph being Ibrāhīm b. al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik, by the testamentary succession of his brother Yazīd al-Nāqiṣ to him, and the oath of allegiance of the commanders to him for that, and all the people of Syria, except the people of Ḥimṣ, who did not pledge allegiance to him. Account of Marwān's march to Syria and the deposition of Ibrāhīm In this year, Marwān marched to Syria to fight Ibrāhīm b. al-Walīd. The reason for that was part of what we have already mentioned of Marwān's march after the killing of al-Walīd, his condemnation of his killing, his gaining control of the Jazīrah, and then his pledge of allegiance to Yazīd b. al-Walīd after Yazīd had appointed him to his father's office. When Yazīd b. al-Walīd died, Marwān marched with the armies of the Jazīrah, leaving behind his son ʿAbd al-Malik with a great force at al-Raqqah. When Marwān reached Qinnasrīn, he met there Bishr b. al-Walīd, whom his brother Yazīd had appointed over Qinnasrīn, and with him was his brother Masrūr b. al-Walīd. They made peace, and Marwān called them to pledge allegiance to him. Yazīd b. ʿUmar b. Hubayrah inclined to him among the Qaysīs, and they handed over Bishr and his brother Masrūr. Marwān seized them and imprisoned them, and he marched with the people of Qinnasrīn toward Ḥimṣ. The people of Ḥimṣ had refused, when Yazīd died, to pledge allegiance to Ibrāhīm and ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz. Ibrāhīm sent ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz and the army of the people of Damascus against them, and he besieged them in their city. Marwān hastened his march, and when he drew near Ḥimṣ, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz withdrew from it, and its people went out to Marwān and pledged allegiance to him and marched with him. Ibrāhīm b. al-Walīd dispatched the armies from Damascus with Sulaymān b. Hishām, and he encamped at ʿAyn al-Jarr with one hundred and twenty thousand, while Marwān encamped there with eighty thousand. Marwān called them to refrain from fighting him and to release the two sons of al-Walīd, al-Ḥakam and ʿUthmān, from prison, and he guaranteed them that he would not seek out anyone among the killers of al-Walīd. They did not respond to him and persisted in fighting him. They fought from the rising of the day until the afternoon, and the killing among them was great. Marwān was a man of stratagem and cunning. He sent three thousand horsemen, and they marched behind his army and cut a canal that was there, and they made for Ibrāhīm's camp to raid it. Sulaymān and those with him were occupied with the fighting and were unaware until there were horses, flashing weapons, and the call of "Allāhu akbar" in their camp from behind them. When they saw that, they fled, and the people of Ḥimṣ put the sword to them out of their rancor against them, killing seventeen thousand of them. The people of the Jazīrah and the people of Qinnasrīn refrained from killing them, and they brought to Marwān from their captives as many as the slain or more. Marwān took their oath of allegiance to the two sons of al-Walīd, and he released them, killing none of them except two men, one of them Yazīd b. al-ʿAqār and al-Walīd b. Maṣād, both Kalbīs, who had been among those who had taken charge of killing al-Walīd; he imprisoned them, and they perished in his prison. Yazīd b. Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Qasrī fled among those who fled with Sulaymān to Damascus, and they joined Ibrāhīm and ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. al-Ḥajjāj. They said to one another: If the two sons of al-Walīd remain until Marwān brings them out and hands the matter over to them, they will spare none of the killers of their father. The best course is to kill them. Yazīd b. Khālid saw to that and ordered Abū al-Asad, the mawlā of Khālid, to kill them. He brought out Yūsuf b. ʿUmar and struck his neck. They wanted to kill Abū Muḥammad al-Sufyānī, but he entered a room of the prison and locked it, and they could not open it. They wanted to burn it, but they were not brought fire, until it was said that Marwān's cavalry had entered the city, so they fled, and Ibrāhīm fled and hid. Sulaymān plundered what was in the treasury and divided it among his companions and left the city.
