Translation

✧ Mention of the opposition of Marwān b. Muḥammad In this year Marwān b. Muḥammad openly opposed Yazīd b. al-Walīd. The reason for that was that when al-Walīd was killed, ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān b. Muḥammad was with al-Ghamr b. Yazīd, the brother of al-Walīd, in Ḥarrān after his return from the summer expedition. Over al-Jazīrah was ʿAbdah b. al-Rayyāḥ al-Ghassānī as governor for al-Walīd. When al-Walīd was killed, ʿAbdah departed from it to Syria. Then ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān b. Muḥammad seized Ḥarrān and al-Jazīrah and took control of them. He wrote to his father in Armenia informing him of that and advising him to hasten the march. Marwān prepared to march and sent men to the frontier regions to control and guard them. He declared that he was seeking vengeance for the blood of al-Walīd, and he marched with the troops, and with him was Thābit b. Nuʿaym al-Judhāmī from the people of Palestine. The reason for his accompanying him was that Hishām had imprisoned him. The reason for his imprisonment was that Hishām had sent him to Ifrīqiyah when they killed his governor Kulthūm b. ʿIyāḍ, and he corrupted the army, so Hishām imprisoned him. Marwān had come to Hishām during one of his delegations and interceded for him, so he released him and took him along with him. When Marwān proceeded on this march, Thābit b. Nuʿaym ordered those with Marwān from the people of Syria to join him and to abandon Marwān, so that they would return to Syria. They responded to him in that, and there gathered with him twice the number of those with Marwān. They spent the night keeping watch over each other. When morning came, they drew up in ranks for battle. Marwān ordered a caller to call out between the two ranks: “O people of Syria, what calls you to this? Have I not dealt well with you?” They answered him: “We used to obey you out of obedience to the caliph. He has been killed, and the people of Syria have pledged allegiance to Yazīd, so we accepted the authority of Thābit to lead us to our military districts.” Then they called to them: “You lie, for you do not want what you have said. You only want to seize by force the property of the protected people you pass by! Between me and you is nothing but the sword until you submit to me, and I will march with you to the raid, then I will leave you to join your military districts.” So they submitted to him. He seized Thābit b. Nuʿaym and his sons and imprisoned them, and he took firm control of the army until he reached Ḥarrān. He sent them on to Syria, and he called the people of al-Jazīrah to the stipend register and enrolled more than twenty thousand. He prepared to march against Yazīd. Yazīd wrote to him, asking him to pledge allegiance to him and to appoint him over what ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān had appointed his father Muḥammad b. Marwān over, namely al-Jazīrah, Armenia, al-Mawṣil, and Adharbayjān. Marwān pledged allegiance to him, and Yazīd granted him the governorship of what he had mentioned to him.
