Then the Year 126 AH Began
ذِكْرُ خَبَرِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ سُرَيْجٍ وَأَمَانِهِ وَفِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ أُومِنَ الْحَارِثُ بْنُ سُرَيْجٍ وَهُوَ بِبِلَادِ التُّرْكِ، وَكَانَ مُقَامُهُ عِنْدَهُمُ اثْنَتَيْ عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً، وَأُمِرَ بِالْعَوْدِ إِلَى خُرَاسَانَ. وَكَانَ السَّبَبُ فِي ذَلِكَ أَنَّ الْفِتْنَةَ لَمَّا وَقَعَتْ بِخُرَاسَانَ بَيْنَ نَصْرٍ وَالْكَرْمَانِيِّ خَافَ نَصْرٌ قُدُومَ الْحَارِثِ عَلَيْهِ فِي أَصْحَابِهِ وَالتُّرْكِ فَيَكُونُ أَشَدَّ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْكَرْمَانِيِّ وَغَيْرِهِ، وَطَمِعَ أَنْ يُنَاصِحَهُ، فَأَرْسَلَ مُقَاتِلَ بْنَ حَيَّانَ النَّبَطِيَّ وَغَيْرَهُ لِيَرُدُّوهُ عَنْ بِلَادِ التُّرْكِ. وَسَارَ خَالِدُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وَخَالِدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو مَوْلَى بَنِي عَامِرٍ إِلَى يَزِيدَ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ فَأَخَذَا لِلْحَارِثِ أَمَانًا، فَكَتَبَ لَهُ أَمَانَهُ، وَأَمَرَ نَصْرٌ أَنْ يُرَدَّ عَلَيْهِ مَا أُخِذَ لَهُ، وَأَمَرَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ عَامِلَ الْكُوفَةِ بِذَلِكَ أَيْضًا، فَأَخَذَا الْأَمَانَ وَسَارَا إِلَى الْكُوفَةِ ثُمَّ إِلَى خُرَاسَانَ، فَأَرْسَلَ نَصْرٌ إِلَيْهِ، فَلَقِيَهُ الرَّسُولُ وَقَدْ رَجَعَ مَعَ مُقَاتِلِ بْنِ حَيَّانَ وَأَصْحَابِهِ، فَوَصَلَ إِلَى نَصْرٍ وَقَامَ بِمَرْوِ الرُّوذِ، وَرَدَّ نَصْرٌ عَلَيْهِ مَا أُخِذَ لَهُ. وَكَانَ عَوْدُهُ سَنَةَ سَبْعٍ وَعِشْرِينَ وَمِائَةٍ.
Translation
✧ Account of al-Ḥārith b. Surayj and his grant of security In this year al-Ḥārith b. Surayj was granted security while he was in the lands of the Turks. He had stayed among them for twelve years, and he was ordered to return to Khurasan. The reason for that was that when the strife occurred in Khurasan between Naṣr and al-Kirmānī, Naṣr feared that al-Ḥārith would come against him with his companions and the Turks, and that would be harder on him than al-Kirmānī and others. He hoped that al-Ḥārith would be sincere to him, so he sent Muqātil b. Ḥayyān al-Nabaṭī and others to bring him back from the lands of the Turks. Khālid b. Ziyād al-Tirmidhī and Khālid b. ʿAmr, the client of Banū ʿĀmir, traveled to Yazīd b. al-Walīd and obtained a guarantee of safety for al-Ḥārith. He wrote for him his guarantee of safety, and ordered Naṣr to return to him what had been taken from him. He also ordered ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, the governor of Kufa, to do the same. The two took the guarantee of safety and traveled to Kufa, then to Khurasan. Naṣr sent to him, and the messenger met him after he had returned with Muqātil b. Ḥayyān and his companions. He reached Naṣr and stayed at Marw al-Rūdh, and Naṣr returned to him what had been taken from him. His return was in the year 127 AH.
