✧ Mention of the disagreement among the people of Khurasan In this year, disagreement occurred in Khurasan between the Nizāriyya and the Yamāniyya, and al-Kirmānī openly opposed Naṣr b. Sayyār. The reason for that was that Naṣr saw that discord had arisen, so he brought out the contents of the treasury and gave the people part of their stipends in silver and gold from the vessels that he had made for al-Walīd. The people demanded the stipend from him while he was delivering a sermon, so Naṣr said: "Beware of disobedience! You must adhere to obedience and the community!" The people of the market leapt up to their markets, so Naṣr became angry and said: "You have no stipend with me." Then he said: "It is as if I see you when an unbearable evil springs from beneath your feet, and as if I see you cast down in the markets like slaughtered camels. The rule of no man lasts long but that they grow weary of it. You, O people of Khurasan, are a frontier garrison facing the enemy. Beware lest two swords clash among you. You are nurturing a matter by which you desire discord, and may God not preserve you! I have spread you out and folded you up, [and folded you up and spread you out], yet I do not have ten of you! I and you are as it was said: Hold fast to our companions, we drive you on; for we have known your best and your worst. So fear God! By God, if two swords clash among you, one of you will wish that he could be stripped of his wealth and his children! O people of Khurasan, you have despised the community and inclined toward division!" Then he quoted the words of al-Nābigha al-Dhubyānī: If your wretchedness overcomes you, then I have striven for your well-being. Naṣr's appointment over Khurasan came to him from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, so al-Kirmānī said to his companions: "The people are in discord, so look for a man to manage your affairs." Al-Kirmānī was only called that because he was born in Kirmān, and his name was Judayʿ b. ʿAlī al-Azdī al-Maʿnī. They said to him: "You are the one for us." The Muḍariyya said to Naṣr: "Al-Kirmānī is corrupting matters against you, so send to him (and kill him or imprison him). He said: "No, but I have male and female children, so I will marry my sons to his daughters and my daughters to his sons." They said: "No." He said: "Then send him a hundred thousand dirhams, and he is stingy, and he will not give his companions anything of it, so they will disperse from him." They said: "No, this is strength for him." They kept at him until they said to him: "Al-Kirmānī, if he could only attain authority and kingship through Christianity and Judaism, would become a Christian and a Jew." Naṣr and al-Kirmānī had been close friends, and al-Kirmānī had been good to Naṣr during the governorship of Asad b. ʿAbd Allāh. When Naṣr was appointed, he removed al-Kirmānī from the leadership and appointed someone else to it, so distance grew between them. When they pressed Naṣr much about the matter of al-Kirmānī, he resolved to imprison him. He sent the commander of his guard to bring him. The Azd wanted to rescue him from his hands, but he prevented them from that and went with the commander of the guard to Naṣr, laughing. When he entered upon him, Naṣr said to him: "O Kirmānī, did not the letter of Yūsuf b. ʿUmar come to me ordering your execution, and I wrote back to him, saying: 'He is the elder of Khurasan and its horseman,' and so I spared your blood?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Did I not pay on your behalf what you owed in compensation, and distribute it among the people's stipends?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Did I not appoint your son ʿAlī as chief despite the dislike of your people?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Then you have exchanged all that for consensus on discord!" Al-Kirmānī said: "The emir has said nothing but that I have done more than it, and I am grateful for that. And from me during the days of Asad there was what you know, so let the emir be deliberate, for I do not love discord." Sālim b. Aḥwaz said: "Strike his neck, O emir!" ʿIṣma b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Asadī said to al-Kirmānī: "You desire discord and what you will not attain." Al-Miqdām and Qudāma, the two sons of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Nuʿaym al-ʿĀmirī, said: "The courtiers of Pharaoh were better than you when they said, 'Put him and his brother off.' By God, al-Kirmānī will not be killed because of what you two say!" So he ordered him to be struck and imprisoned in the citadel for three nights remaining of the month of Ramaḍān in the year 126. The Azd spoke out, so Naṣr said: "I have sworn to imprison him, and no harm will reach him from me. If you fear for him, then choose a man to be with him." So they chose a man to be with him. They chose Yazīd al-Naḥwī, and he was with him. A man from the people of Nasaf came and said to the family of al-Kirmānī: "What will you give me if I get him out?" They said: "Whatever you ask." He went to the water channel in the citadel and widened it, and said to the sons of al-Kirmānī: "Write to your father to prepare tonight to come out." So they wrote to him and put the letter in the food. Al-Kirmānī, Yazīd al-Naḥwī, and Khaḍir b. Ḥakīm ate supper, and the two left him. Al-Kirmānī entered the tunnel, and a snake coiled on his belly but did not harm him. He came out of the tunnel and mounted his horse al-Bashīr with the shackle still on his leg. They brought him to ʿAbd al-Malik b. Ḥarmala, who released him. It was said: rather, a client of his freed al-Kirmānī after seeing a hole in the citadel, widened it, and brought him out. By dawn about a thousand had gathered with him, and by the time the day had fully risen they reached three thousand. The Azd had pledged allegiance to ʿAbd al-Malik b. Ḥarmala according to the Book of God and the Sunnah of His Messenger, so when al-Kirmānī came out, ʿAbd al-Malik put him forward. When al-Kirmānī fled, Naṣr encamped at the gate of Marw al-Rūdh and addressed the people, disparaging al-Kirmānī. He said: "He was born in Kirmān, so he was a Kirmānī, then he fell to Herat and became a Herawī. The one who falls between two beds has neither a firm root nor a growing branch." Then he mentioned the Azd and said: "If they gather together, they are the most abased people, and if they refuse, they are as al-Akhṭal said: Frogs in the darkness of night calling to one another; their voices guided the sea serpent to them. Then he regretted what he had done and said: "Remember God, for that is good with no evil in it." Then many people gathered to Naṣr, and he sent Sālim b. Aḥwaz with the armored cavalry against al-Kirmānī. People interceded between Naṣr and al-Kirmānī and asked Naṣr to grant him safe conduct and not imprison him. Al-Kirmānī came and placed his hand in Naṣr's hand, and Naṣr ordered him to keep to his house. Then something reached al-Kirmānī about Naṣr, so he went out to a village of his. Naṣr went out and encamped at the gate of Marw. They spoke to him about al-Kirmānī, and he granted him safe conduct. Naṣr's opinion was to expel him from Khurasan. Sālim b. Aḥwaz said to him: "If you expel him, you will make his name famous, and people will say: 'He expelled him only because he feared him.'" Naṣr said: "What I fear from him if he leaves is easier than what I fear from him while he stays. When a man is banished from his land, his affair becomes small." They refused him, so he granted him safe conduct and gave his companions ten dirhams each. Al-Kirmānī came to Naṣr, and he granted him safe conduct. When Ibn Jumhūr was dismissed from Iraq and ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz was appointed in Shawwāl of the year 126, Naṣr delivered a sermon and mentioned Ibn Jumhūr. He said: "I knew that he was not among the governors of Iraq, and God has dismissed him and appointed the good son of the good." Al-Kirmānī became angry on behalf of Ibn Jumhūr and returned to gathering men and acquiring weapons. He would attend the Friday prayer with fifteen hundred or more or less, and pray outside the enclosure, then enter and greet Naṣr but not sit. Then he stopped coming to Naṣr and openly showed opposition. Naṣr sent to him with Sālim b. Aḥwaz to say: "By God, I did not intend any harm by imprisoning you, but I feared corruption from the people, so come to me." He said: "Were you not in my house, I would kill you. Go back to Ibn al-Aqṭaʿ and tell him whatever you wish of good or evil." He returned to Naṣr and told him. Naṣr kept sending to him time after time. The last thing al-Kirmānī said to him was: "I do not feel safe that a people will carry you to something other than what you intend, and then you will do to us what leaves no remnant. If you wish, I will depart from you, not out of fear of you, but I dislike bringing ill omen upon the people of this town and shedding blood in it." So he prepared to go out to Jurjān. (Al-Maʿnī: with a fatḥah on the mīm, a sukūn on the unpointed ʿayn, and after it a nūn: a tribe of the Azd.)
