✧ Mention of the war between the people of al-Yamāmah and their governor When al-Walīd b. Yazīd was killed, ʿAlī b. al-Muhājir was over al-Yamāmah, having been appointed over it by Yūsuf b. ʿUmar. Al-Muhayr b. Sulmā b. Hilāl, one of the Banū al-Duʾul b. Ḥanīfah, said to him: “Leave our land to us,” but he refused. So al-Muhayr gathered forces against him and marched upon him while he was in his palace at Qāʿ Hajar. They met at al-Qāʿ, and ʿAlī was routed until he entered his palace; then he fled to al-Madīnah. Al-Muhayr killed a number of his companions. Yaḥyā b. Abī Ḥafṣ had forbidden Ibn al-Muhājir from fighting, but he disobeyed him, so he said: I offered my sincere counsel to Banū Kilāb, but they would not accept my consultation and advice; may others besides them be ransom for Banū Ḥanīfah, for they are the horsemen of every victory. Shaqīq b. ʿAmr al-Sadūsī said: If you make peace with al-Muhayr and his band, you are safe from enemies, fear, and terror—a youth who went forth on the day of al-Qāʿ with the going forth of a noble one, seeking thereby goodly renown along with reward. This is the Day of al-Qāʿ. Al-Muhayr assumed command over al-Yamāmah. Then he died and left as his successor over al-Yamāmah ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Nuʿmān, one of the Banū Qays b. Thaʿlabah b. al-Duʾul. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Nuʿmān appointed al-Mundalith b. Idrīs al-Ḥanafī over al-Falaj—a village among the villages of Banū ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah, though it is said to belong to Banū Tamīm. Banū Kaʿb b. Rabīʿah b. ʿĀmir gathered against him, and with them were Banū ʿUqayl. They came to al-Falaj against al-Mundalith and fought him. Al-Mundalith and most of his companions were killed, while not many of his companions from Banū ʿĀmir were killed. On that day Yazīd ibn al-Ṭathriyyah was killed—his mother being named after Ṭathr b. ʿAnz b. Wāʾil—and he is Yazīd b. al-Muntashir. His brother Thawr ibn al-Ṭathriyyah mourned him: I see the tamarisk from the direction of al-ʿAqīq dwelling near me, remaining, while calamities have snatched away Yazīd. He used to defend the two stone enclosures with his sword, and his bounty reached the farthest district of the tribe. This is the first Day of al-Falaj. When the killing of al-Mundalith reached ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Nuʿmān, he gathered a thousand from Ḥanīfah and others and raided al-Falaj. When the people lined up, Abū Laṭīfah b. Muslim al-ʿUqaylī fled, and the rajaz poet said: Abū Laṭīfah the hypocrite fled, and the two Jafūnīs fled, and Ṭāriq fled, when the flashing swords surrounded them. Ṭāriq b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Qushayrī, and the two Jafūnīs are from Banū Qushayr. Banū Jaʿdah stripped off the packsaddles and turned their backs, and most of them were killed. The hand of Ziyād b. Ḥayyān al-Jaʿdī was cut off, and he said: I call to mind a hand that is gone, and a forearm; I call them to mind, but I do not think I shall find them. Then he was killed. One of the Rabīʿīs said: We rose against Kaʿb with broadswords and lances, and with horses dusty, bending in their bits. The sun’s horn had not set before you saw us driving Banū Kaʿb like the driving of beasts, with blows that remove heads from their resting places, and thrusts like the mouths of bursting water-skins. This day is the second Day of al-Falaj. Then Banū ʿUqayl, Qushayr, Jaʿdah, and Numayr gathered together, with Abū Sahlah al-Numayrī over them, and they killed those of Banū Ḥanīfah they met at Maʿdin al-Ṣaḥrāʾ and plundered their women, while Banū Numayr held back from the women. Then when ʿUmar b. al-Wāziʿ al-Ḥanafī saw what ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Nuʿmān had done on the second Day of al-Falaj, he said: “I am not less than ʿAbd Allāh or others who raid, and this is an interval in which the Sultan’s punishment is not to be feared.” So he gathered his cavalry and came to al-Sharīf and dispersed his horsemen, and they raided, and he himself raided, and his hands were filled with spoils. He returned with those who were with him until he came to al-Nashshāsh. Banū ʿĀmir advanced, having been mustered, and ʿUmar b. al-Wāziʿ was not aware until he heard the grumbling of camels. He gathered the women in a tent and placed a guard over them, met the people, and fought them, but he and those with him were routed. ʿUmar b. al-Wāziʿ fled and reached al-Yamāmah, while a great many of Banū Ḥanīfah fell in the heart of the land from thirst and intense heat. Banū ʿĀmir returned with captives and women. Al-Quḥayf said: At al-Nashshāsh is a day in which flew for us renown, and deeds were counted for us. He also said: May my maternal aunt be ransom for Banū ʿUqayl and Kaʿb when the watering troughs crowd together. They left them lying at al-Nashshāsh with blows, the lightest of which is severe. Qays held back at the Day of al-Nashshāsh from plundering, so ʿUkl came and plundered them. This is the Day of al-Nashshāsh, and Ḥanīfah had no gathering after it, except that ʿUbayd Allāh b. Muslim al-Ḥanafī gathered a force and raided a watering place belonging to Qushayr called Ḥalabān. The poet said: Qushayr met, on the day they met ʿUbayd Allāh, one of the great calamities. They met at Ḥalabān a lion, a bold one who does not sleep over blood-feuds. And he raided ʿUkl and killed twenty thousand of them.
