Chapter mentioning a group of the prophets of the Israelites after Mūsā (peace be upon him)
Translation
✧ He is Shamwīl – and it is said: Ashmawīl – b. Bālā b. ʿAlqamah b. Yarkhām b. Alyahwā b. Tahwā b. Ṣūfā b. ʿAlqamah b. Māḥith b. ʿAmūṣā b. ʿIzriyā. Muqātil said: He is from the progeny of Hārūn. Mujāhid said: He is Ashmawīl b. Halfāqā. He did not trace his genealogy beyond this, so God knows best. Part of the account of Ashmūʾīl b. Bālī is that when affliction became prolonged upon the Children of Israel, and the enemies coveted them, and the Ark was taken from them, after that they would not meet a king except in fear. Then Jālūt, king of the Canaanites, whose dominion was between Egypt and Palestine, advanced against them, defeated them, imposed the jizyah upon them, and took the Torah from them. They called upon God to send them a prophet with whom they would fight. The tribe of prophethood had perished, and none remained of them except a pregnant woman. They confined her in a house, fearing that she would give birth to a girl and exchange her for a boy, because of the desire they saw among the Children of Israel for her child. She gave birth to a boy and named him Ashmūʾīl, meaning: God heard my supplication. The reason for this naming was that she had been barren. Her husband had another wife who had borne him ten sons, and she vaunted over her because of the many children. The old woman was broken-hearted and called upon God to grant her a child. God had mercy on her brokenness, and she menstruated at that time, and her husband approached her, and she conceived. When the term of pregnancy was completed, she gave birth to a boy and named him Ashmūʾīl.
