Translation
✧ From Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib, from ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, who said: A boy was born to the brother of Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, and they named him al-Walīd. The Prophet ﷺ said: "You have named him with the name of your Pharaohs. There will certainly be in this nation a man called al-Walīd who is worse for this nation than Pharaoh was for his people." In a narration from al-Awzāʿī, he said: I asked al-Zuhrī about this ḥadīth, and he said: If al-Walīd b. Yazīd is appointed as caliph, then it is he; otherwise it is al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik. Ibn al-Jawzī, may God have mercy on him, said: Al-Walīd b. Yazīd is more deserving than al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik. Al-Walīd b. Yazīd was notorious for heresy, openly obstinate, and discarded religion. The Prophet ﷺ said: "You have named him with the names of your Pharaohs," because the name of Moses' Pharaoh was al-Walīd. When al-Walīd became ruler, he increased in the amusement, drink, and songs that he used to engage in, to the extent that he summoned Maʿbad the singer from Madinah. He came while al-Walīd was at a pool filled with wine. He sang to him, and al-Walīd threw himself into the pool, drank from it, then came out and was received with garments and censers. He gave Maʿbad fifteen thousand dinars and said: "Depart with it to your family and conceal what you have seen." Abū ʿUbaydah al-Marzubānī narrated, saying: Aḥmad b. Kāmil narrated to us, saying: Al-Walīd b. Yazīd was a zindīq. One day he opened the muṣḥaf and saw in it: "And they sought victory, and every obstinate tyrant failed" [Qurʾan 14:15]. He threw it away and shot arrows at it, saying: You threaten me with an obstinate tyrant; here I am, an obstinate tyrant. When you come to your Lord on the day of gathering, say: O Lord, al-Walīd burned me. Ḥulm al-Wādī the singer said: We were with al-Walīd when news of Hishām's death came to him, and he was congratulated on assuming the caliphate. The staff and the seal were brought to him. He said: We paused for a while and looked at him with the eye of the caliphate. Then he said: Sing to me: My day has become pleasant, and the drinking of wine is delightful. The news of the one in al-Ruṣāfah came to us. The courier came to us announcing Hishām's death, and he brought us a seal for the caliphate. So we drank in the morning pure wine from ʿĀnah, and we amused ourselves with a singing-girl, a fortune-teller. He swore that he would not leave his place until this poetry was sung to him and he drank to it. So we did that, and we continued singing until nightfall.
