Translation

✧ From Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān: that al-Walīd appointed Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm over the judiciary of al-Madīnah, and al-Walīd desired to perform the pilgrimage. He had a dome made of teak wood to place around the Kaʿbah so that he and whoever he wished from his family and women could circumambulate inside it. He was harsh and tyrannical. He intended, by his claim, to circumambulate inside it around the Kaʿbah while the people circumambulated outside the dome. He had it carried on camels from Syria and sent with it a commander from the commanders of the people of Syria with a thousand horsemen, and he sent with him money to distribute among the people of al-Madīnah. He arrived with it, and it was set up in the prayer place of the Messenger of God ﷺ. The people of al-Madīnah were alarmed by that, then they gathered and said: To whom shall we turn for refuge in this matter? They said: To Saʿd b. Ibrāhīm. So the people came to him and informed him of the news, and he ordered them to set it ablaze. They said: We cannot do that; with it is a commander with a thousand horsemen from the people of Syria. He called a freedman of his and said: Bring the saddlebag. He brought him a saddlebag containing the coat of mail of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān in which he had witnessed Badr. He poured it over himself and said to his servant: Bring my mule. He brought him his mule, and he mounted it. Not a single Qurashī or Anṣārī stayed behind from him that day until he reached it and said: Bring me fire. Fire was brought, and he set it ablaze in it. The commander became angry and considered disputing, but it was said to him: This is the judge of the Commander of the Faithful, and the people are with him, and you have no power against him. So he turned back and returned to Syria, and the slaves of the people of al-Madīnah were satiated with the speaking one from what they plundered of its iron. When that reached al-Walīd, he wrote to him: Appoint a man over the judiciary and come to us. So he appointed a man over the judiciary and rode until he reached Syria, and he stayed at his gate for months without being granted permission until his provisions were exhausted, and the prolonged stay harmed him. While he was one evening in the mosque, he saw a young man in a yellow cloak, drunk. He said: Who is this? They said: This is the maternal uncle of the Commander of the Faithful, drunk, roaming in the mosque. He said to a freedman of his: Bring the whip. He brought him his whip, and he said: Bring him to me. He was brought, and he struck him in the mosque eighty lashes, then mounted his mule and departed, returning to al-Madīnah. The young man was brought in to al-Walīd after being flogged, and he said: Who did this to him? They said: A man of al-Madīnah who was in the mosque. He said: Bring him to me. He was overtaken after a day's journey and entered upon him. He said, Abā Isḥāq: What have you done, O son of your brother? He said: O Commander of the Faithful, you appointed us to one of your affairs, and I saw the legal punishment of God being neglected—a drunkard roaming in the mosque while delegations and notables of the people were there. I disliked that the people should return from you with the suspension of the legal punishments, so I carried out his punishment upon him. He said: May God reward you well, and he ordered money for him and sent him back to al-Madīnah, and he did not mention to him anything about the matter of the dome nor about his action in it.
