✧ Mention of the war between Balj and the two sons of ʿAbd al-Malik, and the death of Balj, and the governorship of Thaʿlaba b. Salāma over al-Andalus In the year 124 AH, there was a fierce war in al-Andalus between Balj and Umayya and Qaṭan, the two sons of ʿAbd al-Malik b. Qaṭan. The reason for it was that when the two fled from Cordoba, as we have mentioned, and when their father was killed, they sought help from the people of the districts and the Berbers. A large host gathered with them, said to number one hundred thousand fighting men. Balj and those with him heard of them, so he marched against them. They met and fought a severe battle. Balj was wounded several times, then he gained victory over the two sons of ʿAbd al-Malik and the Berbers and those with them, and killed a great number of them. He returned to Cordoba victorious and triumphant, and remained seven days, then died of the wounds he had sustained. His death was in Shawwāl of this year, and his governorship had lasted eleven months. When he died, his companions set over themselves Thaʿlaba b. Salāma al-ʿIjlī, because Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik had enjoined them: 'If any mishap befalls Balj and Kulthūm, then the commander is Thaʿlaba.' So he took charge of affairs. During his days, the Berbers rose in the region of Mārida, so he raided them and killed a great number of them, and took a man of them captive, and brought them to Cordoba.
