✧ The expedition of Asad to al-Khuttal In this year, Asad raided al-Khuttal, sending Muṣʿab b. ʿAmr al-Khuzāʿī there. He marched and encamped near Badr Ṭarkhān. Badr Ṭarkhān sought safe-conduct to go out to Asad, so Muṣʿab granted him safe-conduct and sent him to Asad. He asked Asad to accept one million dirhams from him, but Asad refused and said: "You entered it while you were a stranger from the people of al-Bāmiyān. Leave al-Khuttal as you entered it." Badr Ṭarkhān said: "You entered Khurasan with ten mounts, and if you were to leave it, you would not be carried on less than five hundred camels and other things. I entered al-Khuttal as a young man, so restore my youth to me and take what I have earned from it." Asad became angry and sent him back to Muṣʿab so that he could enable him to return to his fortress. Badr Ṭarkhān arrived with a mawlā of Asad to Muṣʿab, and Salamah b. ʿUbayd Allāh, who was one of the mawālī, took him and said: "The amīr will regret letting him go and not detaining him with him." Asad advanced with the people and said to Mujashshir b. Muzāḥim: "How are you?" Mujashshir said: "Yesterday I was in a better state than today. Badr Ṭarkhān was in our hands and offered what he offered, but the amīr neither accepted what he offered nor tightened his grip on him; rather he let him go and ordered that he be admitted to his fortress." Asad then regretted that and sent to Muṣʿab asking: "Has Badr Ṭarkhān entered his fortress or not?" The messenger came and found him with Salamah b. ʿUbayd Allāh. Asad had him brought to him and ordered that his hand be cut off, and said: "Who here is a relative of Abū Fudayk—a man of the Azd whom Badr Ṭarkhān had killed?" A man of the Azd stood up and said: "I am." He said: "Strike his neck," and he did so. Asad took control of the great fortress, but a small fortress above it remained, containing Badr Ṭarkhān's son and his wealth, and it could not be reached. Asad dispersed the army in the valleys of al-Khuttal and filled their hands with spoils and captives, while its people fled to China.
