Translation
✧ In the year 118 AH, Asad encamped at Balkh. He dispatched Judayʿ al-Kirmānī to the fortress in which were the family of al-Ḥārith and his companions—its name being al-Tubūshkān in Upper Ṭakhāristān. In it were the Banū Barzā al-Taghlibiyyūn, the in-laws of al-Ḥārith. Al-Kirmānī besieged them until he conquered it. He killed the Banū Barzā and took captive the generality of its inhabitants, both Arabs and mawālī and children. He sold them among those who bid higher in the market of Balkh. He took vengeance on al-Ḥārith with four hundred and fifty men of his companions, their chief being Jarīr b. Maymūn the qāḍī. Al-Ḥārith said to them: 'If you must part from me, then seek the amān while I am present, for they will answer you; but if I depart before that, they will not grant amān.' They said: 'Depart you and leave us.' They sent seeking amān. Asad was informed that the people had neither food nor water. So Asad sent Judayʿ al-Kirmānī against them with six thousand. He besieged them in the fortress when its people had become thirsty and hungry. They asked to descend under judgment, and that their women and children be spared. He granted them that. They descended under the judgment of Asad. He sent to al-Kirmānī ordering him to send to him fifty men of their notables, among them al-Muhājir b. Maymūn. They were brought to him, and he killed them. He wrote to al-Kirmānī to divide those who remained with him into thirds: a third he should kill, a third he should cut off their hands and feet, and a third he should cut off their hands. Al-Kirmānī did that, and he brought out their baggage and sold it. Asad took the city of Balkh as a residence and transferred the dīwāns to it. Then he raided Ṭakhāristān, then the land of Jabghawayh, and took booty and captives.
