The Year 116

ذِكْرُ عِدَّةِ حَوَادِثَ وَفِي سنة ست عشرة ومائة عَزَلَ هِشَامٌ عُبَيْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ الْحَبْحَابِ الْمَوْصِلِيَّ عَنْ وِلَايَةِ مِصْرَ  ، وَاسْتَعْمَلَهُ عَلَى إِفْرِيقِيَّةَ، فَسَارَ إِلَيْهَا. وَفِيهَا سَيَّرَ ابْنُ الْحَبْحَابِ جَيْشًا إِلَى صِقِلِّيَّةَ، فَلَقِيَهُمْ مَرَاكِبُ الرُّومِ فَاقْتَتَلُوا قِتَالًا شَدِيدًا، فَانْهَزَمَتِ الرُّومُ، وَكَانُوا قَدْ أَسَرُوا جَمَاعَةً مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، مِنْهُمْ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، فَبَقِيَ أَسِيرًا إِلَى سَنَةِ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ وَمِائَةٍ. وَفِيهَا سَيَّرَ ابْنُ الْحَبْحَابِ أَيْضًا جَيْشًا إِلَى السُّوسِ وَأَرْضِ السُّودَانِ، فَغَنِمُوا وَظَفِرُوا وَعَادُوا. وَفِيهَا اسْتَعْمَلَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْحَبْحَابِ عَطِيَّةَ بْنَ الْحَجَّاجِ الْقَيْسِيَّ عَلَى الْأَنْدَلُسِ، فَسَارَ إِلَيْهَا وَوَلِيَهَا فِي شَوَّالٍ مِنْ هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ، وَعَزَلَ عَبْدَ الْمَلِكِ بْنَ قَطَنٍ، وَكَانَ لَهُ كُلَّ سَنَةٍ غَزَاةٌ، وَهُوَ [ الَّذِي ] افْتَتَحَ جِلِّيقِيَّةَ وَالْبَتَّةَ وَغَيْرَهُمَا. وَقِيلَ: بَلْ وَلِيَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْحَبْحَابِ إِفْرِيقِيَّةَ سَنَةَ سَبْعَ عَشْرَةَ، وَسَتَرِدُ أَخْبَارُهُ هُنَاكَ، وَهَذَا أَصَحُّ ). وَحَجَّ بِالنَّاسِ هَذِهِ السَّنَةَ الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، وَكَانَ وَلِيَّ عَهْدٍ. وَكَانَ الْعُمَّالُ عَلَى الْأَمْصَارِ مَنْ تَقَدَّمَ ذِكْرُهُمْ إِلَّا خُرَاسَانَ، فَكَانَ عَامِلَهَا عَاصِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ. وفي سَنَةُ سِتَّةَ عَشْرَةَ وَمِائَةٍ غَزَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ أَرْضَ الرُّومِ الصَّائِفَةَ. وَفِيهَا كَانَ طَاعُونٌ شَدِيدٌ بِالْعِرَاقِ وَالشَّامِ، وَكَانَ أَشَدَّ بِوَاسِطٍ.

Translation

✧ Mention of Several Events In the year one hundred and sixteen, Hishām dismissed ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Ḥabḥāb al-Mawṣilī from the governorship of Egypt and appointed him over Ifrīqiya, so he traveled there. In it, Ibn al-Ḥabḥāb sent an army to Sicily, and the ships of the Byzantines met them, and they fought a fierce battle. The Byzantines were defeated. They had captured a group of Muslims, among them ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ziyād, who remained a captive until the year one hundred and twenty-one. In it, Ibn al-Ḥabḥāb also sent an army to al-Sūs and the land of the Sudan, and they gained booty, were victorious, and returned. In it, ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥabḥāb appointed ʿAṭiyya b. al-Ḥajjāj al-Qaysī over al-Andalus, and he traveled there and took charge of it in Shawwāl of this year. He dismissed ʿAbd al-Malik b. Qaṭan, who had a raid every year, and he was the one who conquered Jilliqiyya and al-Batta and other places. It was said: rather, ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥabḥāb was appointed over Ifrīqiya in the year seventeen, and his reports will come there, and this is more correct. Al-Walīd b. Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik led the people in the pilgrimage this year, and he was the heir apparent. The governors of the amṣār were those previously mentioned, except Khurāsān, whose governor was ʿĀṣim b. ʿAbd Allāh. In the year one hundred and sixteen, Muʿāwiya b. ʿAbd al-Malik raided the land of the Byzantines in the summer expedition. In it, there was a severe plague in Iraq and Syria, and it was most severe in Wāsiṭ.
