✧ The deposition of al-Ḥārith b. Surayj in Khurasan In the year 116, al-Ḥārith b. Surayj was deposed and proceeded to al-Fāriyāb. ʿĀṣim b. ʿAbd Allāh sent messengers to him, among them Muqātil b. Ḥayyān al-Nabaṭī and Ḥaṭṭāb b. Muḥriz al-Sulamī. They said to those with them: We will not meet al-Ḥārith except with a guarantee of safety. The people refused them that, so al-Ḥārith took them and imprisoned them, and appointed a man to guard them. They bound him and left the prison, mounted, and returned to ʿĀṣim. He commanded them, so they delivered sermons and disparaged al-Ḥārith, mentioning the wickedness of his conduct and his treachery. Al-Ḥārith had donned black and called to the Book of God and the Sunnah of His Prophet and allegiance to the one with whom God is pleased. He marched from al-Fāriyāb and came to Balkh, over which were Naṣr b. Sayyār and al-Tujībī [b. Ḍubayʿah al-Murrī]. They met al-Ḥārith with ten thousand while al-Ḥārith had four thousand, and he fought them and those with them. The people of Balkh were defeated, and al-Ḥārith pursued them, then entered the city of Balkh. Naṣr b. Sayyār left it, and al-Ḥārith ordered that they be spared, appointing over it a man from the descendants of ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim. He then marched to al-Jūzjān and took control of it, as well as al-Ṭālaqān and Marw al-Rūdh. When he was in al-Jūzjān, he consulted his companions about which land to aim for. It was said to him: Marw is the heart of Khurasan, and their horsemen are many. If they met you with nothing but their slaves, they would be enough against you. So stay; if they come to you, fight them, and if they remain, you will cut off supplies from them. He said: I do not think that is right, and he marched to Marw. It was said by the people of judgment in Marw: If he comes to Naysābūr, he will break up our assembly, and if he comes to us, he will be afflicted with disaster. It reached ʿĀṣim that the people of Marw were corresponding with al-Ḥārith, so he said: O people of Marw, you have corresponded with al-Ḥārith. He will not aim for the city except that you will leave it to him. I am going to join Naysābūr and will write to the Commander of the Faithful so that he may reinforce me with ten thousand from the people of Syria. Al-Mujashshir b. Muzāḥim said to him: If they give you their pledge with divorce and manumission to fight with you and be sincere to you, then do not part from them. Al-Ḥārith approached Marw, it is said with sixty thousand, and with him were the horsemen of al-Azd and Tamīm. Among them were Muḥammad b. al-Muthannā, Ḥammād b. ʿĀmir al-Ḥimmānī, Dāwūd al-Aʿsar, Bishr b. Unayf al-Riyāḥī, and ʿAṭāʾ al-Dabbūsī. And among the dihqāns were the dihqān of al-Jūzjān, the dihqān of al-Fāriyāb, the king of al-Ṭālaqān, and the dihqān of Marw al-Rūdh, along with others like them. ʿĀṣim went out with the people of Marw and others and encamped, and ʿĀṣim cut the bridges. The companions of al-Ḥārith came and repaired the bridges. Muḥammad b. al-Muthannā al-Farāhīdhī al-Azdī inclined to ʿĀṣim with two thousand and came to al-Azd, and Ḥammād b. ʿĀmir al-Ḥimmānī inclined to ʿĀṣim and came to Banū Tamīm. Al-Ḥārith and ʿĀṣim met, and on the right wing of al-Ḥārith was Wābiḍ b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Zurārah al-Taghlibī. They fought a fierce battle, and the companions of al-Ḥārith were defeated. Many people among them drowned in the rivers of Marw and in the great river. The dihqāns went to their lands, and Khāzim b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim drowned; he had been with al-Ḥārith. The companions of al-Ḥārith were killed in great numbers. Al-Ḥārith crossed the valley of Marw and pitched a tent near the dwellings of the monks, and ʿĀṣim refrained from him. About three thousand gathered to al-Ḥārith.
