The Year 116

Translation

✧ Mention of those among the notables who died in the year one hundred and sixteen Ḥamzah b. Bīḍ al-Ḥanafī Ḥamzah b. Bīḍ al-Ḥanafī: An excellent poet. Al-Maʾmūn said to al-Naḍr b. Shumayl: Which verse is finest? He said: The saying of Ḥamzah b. Bīḍ: She said to me while eyes were slumbering: Stay with us a day, but I did not stay. Which faces did you seek? You said to her: And which face but to al-Ḥakam? Whenever the doorkeeper of his pavilion says: This is Ibn Bīḍ at the gate, smiling. He attached himself to al-Muhallab b. Abī Ṣufrah, then to his son, then to Abān b. al-Walīd, then to Bilāl b. Abī Barzah, and he earned by poetry a great fortune. He praised Makhkhalad b. Yazīd b. al-Muhallab, while he was acting for his father over Khurasan, and he gave him a hundred thousand dirhams. And he entered upon Yazīd b. al-Muhallab in prison, and recited to him: There was shut against generosity, munificence, and courage an iron door whose key is rough. They see the swift horse's lead in leisure, but the ranks fell short of your pursuit. He said: O Ḥamzah, you did poorly when you proclaimed my name at the wrong time for proclaiming it. Then he tossed to him a bundle tied up, while an intelligence officer stood over him. And he said: Take this dinar, for by God I own nothing else. Ḥamzah took it and wanted to return it to him. He said to him secretly: Take it and do not be cheated of it, for its bezel is a red ruby. So he went out to Khurasan and sold it for thirty thousand. When he received the money, the buyer said to him: By God, if you had refused anything less than fifty thousand dirhams, I would have taken it from you. So he felt constricted and gave him another hundred dinars. Ḥafṣah bt. Sīrīn Ḥafṣah bt. Sīrīn: She read the Qurʾan when she was a girl of twelve years, and she used to complete it every two days, fast perpetually, and stand in prayer at night. On the authority of Hishām b. Ḥassān, he said: I have not seen anyone in al-Baṣrah whom I would prefer over Ḥafṣah. She completed the Qurʾan when she was a girl of twelve years, and died when she was a girl of ninety-two years. She used to perform ablution at mid-morning and enter her prayer place in her house, and she would not leave it until the like of it the next day. Anas b. Mālik and Abū al-ʿĀliyah used to come to her, greeting her. Ibn Nāṣir informed us with his chain from Hishām, he said: Ḥafṣah would light her lamp at night and then stand in her prayer place. Sometimes the lamp would go out, but the house would remain lit for her until morning. Al-Riyāshī said: Ibn ʿĀʾishah narrated to me, from Saʿīd b. ʿĀmir, from Hishām, he said: Ḥafṣah bt. Sīrīn said: My son al-Hudhayl's kindness to me reached the point that he would break reeds in summer and light them for me in winter. He said: So that there would be no smoke for him. She said: And he would milk his she-camel in the morning and bring it to me, saying: Drink, O mother of al-Hudhayl, for the best milk is what has spent the night in the udder. Then he died, and I was granted such patience as He willed to grant me, and despite that I found a burning in my chest that would hardly subside. She said: One night I came upon this verse: (What is with you will come to an end, but what is with God is enduring; and We will surely reward those who were patient according to the best of what they used to do.) Then what I had been finding left me. ʿAmr b. Murrah al-Jamalī ʿAmr b. Murrah al-Jamalī: [He narrated] from Saʿīd b. Sinān, he said: ʿAmr b. Murrah said: I would not like to have sight, remembering that I looked one glance when I was a young man. ʿAmr traced hadiths to ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Awfā. He died in this year. It was said: in the year eighteen. Hishām b. al-Rabīʿ b. Zurārah b. Kathīr b. Khabbāb Hishām b. al-Rabīʿ b. Zurārah b. Kathīr b. Khabbāb, Abū Ḥayyah al-Numayrī: An excellent, eloquent poet. Abū ʿAmr b. al-ʿAlāʾ used to prefer him. [He lived through the two dynasties, the Umayyad and the Abbasid], except that he had recklessness and cowardice, and he would fall in fits at times. Ibn Qutaybah said: He was one of the most lying of people. He would relate that he went out to the desert and called the crows, and they would land around him, and he would take of them whatever he wished. It was said to him: O Abū Ḥayyah, suppose we took you out to the desert and you called them and they did not come to you, what should we do with you? He said: May God then distance them. He had a sword he called Luʿāb al-Maniyyah (the slaver of death), and between it and a piece of wood there was nothing. One of his neighbors related that a dog entered his house one night and he thought it was a thief. He drew his sword and said: O you who are deceived by us, emboldened against us, evil by God is what you have chosen for yourself. A polished sword, the slaver of death, of which you have heard. Exit with pardon for you before I enter with punishment upon you. Then the dog went out, and he said: Praise be to God who transformed you into a dog and spared us a war. Al-Junayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Murrī In Muḥarram of this year, al-Junayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Murrī, governor of Khurasan, died of an illness that struck him in his belly. He had married al-Fāḍilah bt. Yazīd b. al-Muhallab, and the Commander of the Faithful Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik became angry with him, dismissed him, and appointed in his place ʿĀṣim b. ʿAbd Allāh over Khurasan. He said to him: If you catch him before he dies, extinguish his soul. ʿĀṣim b. ʿAbd Allāh had not yet arrived in Khurasan when al-Junayd died in Muḥarram of this year at Marw. Abū al-Juwayriyyah ʿĪsā b. ʿAṣabah said in mourning him: Generosity and al-Junayd perished together, so peace be upon generosity and al-Junayd. They both came to rest in the belly of Marw, while the dove sang upon the branches. You were both the delight of the noble, so when you died, bounty died and the noble died. When ʿĀṣim b. ʿAbd Allāh arrived in Khurasan, he seized al-Junayd's deputies with severe beating and various punishments, and he oppressed them with confiscations and accusations. Then al-Ḥārith b. Surayj went out of obedience to him and confronted him with war, and wars between them took place whose mention would be lengthy. Then in the end al-Ḥārith b. Surayj was defeated and ʿĀṣim prevailed over him.
