✧ The dismissal of al-Junayd and his death, and the appointment of ʿĀṣim over Khurāsān In the year one hundred and sixteen, Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik dismissed al-Junayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Murrī from Khurāsān, and appointed over it ʿĀṣim b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Yazīd al-Hilālī. The reason for that was that al-Junayd married al-Fāḍilah bt. Yazīd b. al-Muhallab, and Hishām became angry and appointed ʿĀṣim over Khurāsān. Al-Junayd had been afflicted with dropsy in his belly, so Hishām said to ʿĀṣim: 'If you reach him while he still has a spark of life, take his life.' ʿĀṣim arrived when al-Junayd had already died. There was enmity between them, so he seized ʿUmārah b. Ḥuraym, whom al-Junayd had appointed as his successor, and who was his paternal cousin, and ʿĀṣim tortured him and tortured al-Junayd's officials. This ʿUmārah was the grandfather of Abū al-Haydhām, the leader of the ʿaṣabiyyah in Syria. Al-Junayd died in Marw. He was one of the generous and much-praised men, but was not commended in his wars.
