The Year 115

Translation

✧ Then the year 115 commenced. Among the events in it was the raid of Muʿāwiyah b. Hishām against the Byzantines. In it, the plague occurred in Syria. In it, severe drought and famine afflicted the people of Khurasan. Al-Junayd gave a man a dirham, and he bought a loaf of bread with it. He said: "You complain of hunger while a loaf costs a dirham? I saw myself in India when grains were sold by number for dirhams." In it, Muʿāwiyah b. Hishām b. Ismāʿīl led the people in the pilgrimage, and he was the governor of Makkah and al-Ṭāʾif. The governors of the amṣār were the governors of the previous year, except that there was disagreement about the governor of Khurasan. Al-Madāʾinī said: Al-Junayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān; others said: ʿUmārah b. Khuraym al-Murrī, and that al-Junayd died in this year and appointed ʿUmārah as his successor. As for al-Madāʾinī, he said: Al-Junayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān died in the year 116, which is the year after this year. (In it, ʿAbd al-Malik b. Qaṭan, the governor of al-Andalus, raided the land of the Basques and returned safely.)
