✧ Mention of those among the notables who died in the year one hundred and thirteen ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr: He was a learned, eloquent, and righteous man. He died in Makkah in this year. From al-Waṣṣāfī, from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr, who said: It is not fitting for one who has adopted God-fearingness and adorned himself with scrupulousness to humble himself before a possessor of worldly wealth. The amīr ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. Bukht Among those notables who died in it: Ibn Jarīr said: In it occurred the death of the amīr ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. Bukht while he was with al-Baṭṭāl ʿAbd Allāh in the land of the Byzantines. He was killed as a martyr, and this is his biography: He is ʿAbd al-Wahhāb b. Bukht, Abū ʿUbayda, and it is said: Abū Bakr. A client of the family of Marwān, a Makkan who settled in Syria, then moved to al-Madīnah. He related from Ibn ʿUmar, Anas, Abū Hurayrah, and a group of the Successors. From him related a multitude, among them Ayyūb, Mālik b. Anas, Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Anṣārī, and ʿUbayd Allāh al-ʿUmarī. His ḥadīth from Anas, raised to the Prophet: "May God make radiant a man who heard this saying of mine, retained it, and then conveyed it to someone other than himself; for many a bearer of jurisprudence conveys it to one more versed in jurisprudence than himself. Three things against which the heart of a believer does not harbor treachery: sincerity of action for God, giving sincere counsel to those in authority, and adhering to the community of the Muslims, for their supplication encompasses them from behind." And he related from Abū al-Zinād, from al-Aʿraj, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: When one of you meets his brother, let him greet him with salām; and if a tree intervenes between them and then he meets him again, let him greet him with salām. Groups of the leading scholars have declared this ʿAbd al-Wahhāb trustworthy. Mālik said: He was frequent in ḥajj, ʿumrah, and military expeditions until he was martyred; and no one had a better right to what was in his saddlebag than his companions. He was generous and open-handed. He was martyred in the lands of the Byzantines with the amīr Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd Allāh al-Baṭṭāl and was buried there, may God Almighty have mercy on him. His death was in this year, as stated by Khalīfah and others. That was because he met the enemy, and some of the Muslims fled, so he began calling out while spurring his horse toward the enemy: "Come to Paradise! Woe to you! Do you flee from Paradise?" Then he fought until he was killed, may God have mercy on him. Makḥūl al-Shāmī Makḥūl al-Shāmī, an eminent Successor, of great standing, the imam of the people of Syria in his time. He was a client of a woman of Hudhayl, and it is said: a client of a woman of the family of Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ. He was a Nubian. And it is said: he was from the captives of Kabul. And it is said: he was of the abnāʾ, from the lineage of the Chosroes.. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq said: I heard him say: I traversed the whole earth in search of knowledge. Al-Zuhrī said: The scholars are four: Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab in the Hijaz, al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī in Baṣrah, al-Shaʿbī in Kufa, and Makḥūl in Syria. Some of them said: He was unable to say "qul" (say); he would only say "kul" (eat). He had high standing among the people; whatever he commanded of any matter would be done. Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz said: He was the most learned in jurisprudence of the people of Syria, and he was more learned in jurisprudence than al-Zuhrī. More than one said: He died in this year. And it is said: after it. And God knows best. He had a signet ring that he did not wear, and on it was inscribed: Protect Makḥūl from the Fire. In this year died ʿAdī b. Thābit al-Anṣārī. And Muʿāwiyah b. Qurrah b. Iyās al-Muzanī, the father of Iyās, the judge of Baṣrah whose intelligence is proverbial. In it died Ḥarām b. Saʿīd b. Muḥayyiṣah, Abū Saʿīd, at the age of seventy years, (Ḥarām: with a fatḥah on the unpointed ḥāʾ and the unpointed rāʾ. Muḥayyiṣah: with a ḍammah on the mīm, a fatḥah on the unpointed ḥāʾ, a doubled yāʾ with two dots beneath, and the unpointed ṣād). In it died Ṭalḥah b. Muṣarrif al-Iyāmī. And ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Saʿīd al-Khudrī, whose kunyah was Abū Jaʿfar, at the age of seventy-seven years. And Wahb b. Munabbih al-Ṣanʿānī, who was younger than his brother Hammām. They were five brothers: Hammām, Wahb, Ghaylān, ʿAqīl, and Maʿqil. It is also said: he died in the year one hundred and ten. In it died al-Ḥurr b. Yūsuf, governor of Mosul, and he was buried in the cemeteries of Quraysh in Mosul, which were opposite his house known as al-Manqūshah, in Dhū al-Ḥijjah. Hishām appointed in his place al-Walīd b. Talīd al-ʿAbsī and ordered him to exert himself diligently in completing the digging of the canal in the city. He commenced it and devoted himself to its work.
