✧ The Killing of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Amīr of al-Andalus, and the Governorship of ʿAbd al-Malik b. Qaṭan In this year, which is the year one hundred and thirteen, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ghāfiqī, the amīr of al-Andalus on behalf of ʿUbayda b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī, raided. Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik had appointed ʿUbayda over Ifrīqiya and al-Andalus in the year one hundred and ten. When he arrived in Ifrīqiya, he saw al-Mustanīr b. al-Ḥārith al-Ḥuraythī raiding in Sicily, and he remained there until winter overtook him. Then he returned, and those with him drowned while al-Mustanīr was saved in his vessel. ʿUbayda imprisoned him as a punishment, flogged him, and paraded him in al-Qayrawān. Then ʿUbayda appointed ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh over al-Andalus. He raided the land of the Franks and penetrated deep into their territory, gaining abundant spoils. Among what he seized was a leg of gold studded with pearls, rubies, and emeralds. He broke it and distributed it among the people. That reached ʿUbayda, and he became intensely angry. He wrote to him threatening him. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, who was a righteous man, replied: To proceed: if the heavens and the earth were a closed up mass, God would make for the God-fearing a way out from them. Then he went out raiding in the land of the Franks this year—and it is said: in the year one hundred and fourteen, which is the correct view—and he and those with him were killed as martyrs. Then ʿUbayda marched from Ifrīqiya to Syria with him, bringing many gifts, slave women, male slaves, beasts, and other things. He asked Hishām to be excused, and Hishām granted that and dismissed him. He had appointed ʿAbd al-Malik b. Qaṭan over al-Andalus after the killing of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. Then Hishām appointed over Ifrīqiya after ʿUbayda, ʿUbayd Allāh b. al-Ḥabḥāb, who was over Egypt. ʿUbayd Allāh marched to Ifrīqiya in the year one hundred and sixteen, released al-Mustanīr from prison, and appointed him over Tunis. Then ʿUbayd Allāh equipped an army with Ḥabīb b. Abī ʿUbayda and sent them to the land of the blacks. He achieved a victory over them the like of which no one had achieved, and seized what he wished. Then he raided by sea and then departed.
